I have received 2 badges for March for Star Seller and I lost the Message Respond because I had not replied to 1 message. However, it was a customer who had contacted me in 2 ways and I did reply to one of the messages. Afterward, I noticed that she had also sent via orders "to help with the order" and therefore I have 2 message slots for the same customer.
If it does update, it will be too late for the March star, but will help for March. Just remember that every initial message needs a reply or be marked as spam.
Unless the message has been moved to spam, each and every message has to be replied to. If it was a recent message I think you can still move it to spam and your stats will update, maybe someone can confirm this

I had the same issue. Customer sent messages in two streams and one was marked as though I hadn't responded. I also had two other messages that were people looking to sell their items to me (not a customer) and another looking to work for me (employment request). In hindsight I should have marked as spam, and it's too late to do it now, so I too lost my star seller status.
I think if it comes through the I need help with my order button, you can't send them to spam and get credit for answering. Etsy is placing more importance to that message. Sorry this happened to you, I did the same thing when we first got the dang star seller thing.
