I have a message from someone I purchased from that didn’t require a response. They send me a coupon code as a thanks for purchasing something from their shop. It did not need to be responded to and now it’s affecting my star seller rating. I have more than 4 messages that I have responded to and it’s only counting 4.
All NEW messages require an answer. The answer is to reply back or spam the message.
The programming is simplistic and can't decipher one type of message from another. As shared above, all messages must be responded to or sent to spam. Try sending the messages to spam now and see if it makes it impact with the star seller stats within the next 24 hours? Some Etsy sellers have opted to create a second account to purchase from to keep things separated. When I receive these types of messages from sellers, I simply respond with a "thanks you" as I appreciate good customer service. But it is equally effective to send the message to spam because a response is not necessary.
All first messages from buyers and sellers must be responded to in 24 hours.
Of course, it required a response.
When in doubt, it helps to read the rules to see what actually is required.

ALL MESSAGES require a response. Reply to each message or mark it as spam.
It's all automated and it doesn't know who a message is from or what it is about, it just sees an unanswered one. You can mark them as spam and your score might recalculate if they are recent messages.
@Oldecrowbakeshoppe: "I have a message from someone I purchased from that didn’t require a response." Almost everyone on this forum can sympathize with you but as it says right on your Star Seller page, you need to reply to the FIRST message of EVERY NEW INCOMING THREAD within 24 hours. It does not matter who sent it, the subject matter, if it is a duplicate or blank or anything else. If it is SPAM then it should be marked as such. Remember that the Star Seller metric is NOT all new messages but only the first message of all new incoming threads.
It is a controversial hack, but if the unanswered new thread is not a Help Request, at least for the time being, it appears that marking an unanswered message as SPAM (even after the 24 hour deadline has passed) will cause your reply percentage to change in a day or two if the original message was within the current star seller period (but not retroactively). Note that subsequent messages from that account may go directly to the SPAM folder.
Why doesn't it require a response? Mummy taught me to always say thank you.
So did mine, but from what I read in the forum, a lot didn't or the kids just didn't listen or pay attention.
My Mom also taught me to say "you're welcome" when someone "thanked" me.
Because that is very old school and even teh etiquette gurus no longer say it is necessary.
That's a terrible thing to teach our children.
Old school or not, as far as I am concerned, good manners will never go out of style in my life.
My theory is that you can be disrespectful online when you aren't standing next to the person which is a sad excuse for not being polite.
It's sad that people think it's okay to be disrespectful.
