I started my Etsy a day ago and have like 4 messages all very suspicious, two are clearly spam. The other two well I believe they are spam too but I wanted to make 100% sure on. They say  it's from Operator and then a name after, it says  auto message from etsy. Gotta be spam right?

Hello,

Etsy is actively engaged in preventing scammers from targeting our community members. If you receive a suspicious message, please proceed with caution. Etsy Support will never ask you to provide personal information via Etsy Messages, such as your email address or password. Any legitimate message from us will show in your "From Etsy" folder.

If you receive a suspicious message, here’s how to report it:

  1. Sign in to Etsy.com and go to Your Account.
  2. Go to Messages
  3. Select the suspicious message from your inbox.
  4. Choose Mark as Spam.

You’ll find examples of common scammer techniques and phishing messages here in our Help Center. Read our Account Security Checklist in the Seller Handbook for more steps you can take to protect your account.

It's a scam. Most of the messages you receive for this first while will be people trying to scam you out of your financial information or personal details.

Mark as SPAM.

I thought so, but being new like my shop literally went up yesterday and I barely have anything on there, I thought I would double check.

It is not very likely a new, unfinished shop gets many genuine messages from customers. Be sure to mark these messages as spam as soon as you get them. Don't reply, don't give any information.

Be sure to finish your shop so it looks professional (policies, About page with shop members, sections, announcement, Public profile and so on.)

Scammers tend to target new shops.

If you receive an actual order, you will see it in your "Orders and Shipping" section and you will receive an email from Etsy notifying you that you have a sale, and there will be a notification in your dashboard as well.

My advice:

  1. IGNORE: Pretend those messages are just digital tumbleweeds blowing through your Etsy desert. Don't click any links. Don't reply. Just... poof... vanish 'em into the ether.
  2. REPORT (to Etsy): Give Etsy the heads-up. They hate spam as much as you do, and they'll probably appreciate you flagging it. Help them keep their platform clean!
  3. TRUST YOUR GUT: If it feels fishy, it probably is fishy. Your artist spidey-sense is tingling for a reason. Listen to it!

  4. messages from etsy will always appear in the “from etsy” folder in your messages
