Skam Messages

Good evening. Today we opened the store and started adding products. To my great surprise, over 3 hours I received more than 30 messages with various  QR codes and other attempts to steal bank details. The same person writes several times. Are they blocked here at all? 4 pages of spam messages. This is in a few hours. Is it always like this here? Is tech support here blocking them? This is the first time in our lives that we have come across a marketplace with such an amount of spam.

Why, when a message is blocked in spam, does this person still send messages, how can I block them forever?

Does it make sense to try to sell something and pay money if this happens here...

Re: Skam Messages

I would be more concerned that a lot of your items are found, not only in other shops on Etsy, but also on Amazon.

You should know that the bots are going wild taking down items that violate the handmade policy and shutting down shops that are re-selling.

If you are in fact making these items and all these other shops are copying you, you might want to make taking down these other items in other shops, your top priority.

Re: Skam Messages

For any other newly opened Shop reading this Thread, It is important to read and understand the House Rules / TOUs, especially relating to what can be legally sold on Etsy, before Listing and opening.

In relation to the proliferation of "xcam" messages, unfortunately, this "scam" racket has been going on for over a year now. Etsy has taken many steps to block / intercept "scam" mesages and many of these have been successful.

Unfortunately newly opened Shops appear to be the prime target at this time. No one can actually work out how the "scammers" are identifying these Shops, but is obviously an attempt to dupe people who are still learning "the ropes" here or people who are listing product inappropriately.

If these mesages are in your "Spam" Folder, you can safely ignore them because Etsy has already identified them as "spam". If the Messages arfe in the "From Etsy" Folder, then these are legitimate communications.

If these "spam" messages are in your normal In Box, simply move them to "Spam" folder.

If you do try and respond, in most instances you will see "This member does not exist" message (or similar) which means that Etsy has already closed the accountfrom which these are being sent.

The $ 15 on-boarding fee was introduced to, in part, to deter / delay the set-up of these "scammer" accounts but, although this has slowed down, there are some very sophisticated "scammers" out there who are managing to circumvent any hurdles Etsy puts in their way.

Re: Skam Messages

You may want to re-read the Etsy Terms of Use (TOU) you agreed to when opening your shop.  Etsy is for handmade (by you), craft supplies and vintage (20 years or older).  The Nemesis Now products you are re-selling are not Etsy legal..

Re: Skam Messages

While I agree with the non-Etsy legal discussion, I have to say, 30 SPAM MESSAGES?  Geez, they really do pounce on new sellers.

Re: Skam Messages

Scammers target people who are breaking Etsy's Terms of Use.

Sadly, the "Submit" button is STILL MISSING on some listings.

@LoriumGifts You asked:  "Does it make sense to try to sell something and pay money if this happens here... "

No, it doesn't make sense for you to try to sell here, for many reasons.  Major one is Etsy has been simply refunding orders, even after the products were delivered to the buyers, when shops violate TOU and are later caught.  Some shops have had thousands of dollars in sales refunded, the money coming straight out of the seller's pocket.  Selling the products you do, your shop would be greatly at risk to take a huge loss.
