I guess I'm slow but I just noticed today that etsy changed the size of the photos. I will use the 1:1 on my phone from now on to take my photos, but if I want to change the ones I have what is the new size I need to resize them to? I've seen threads on this, but no one seems to know what to resize the existing photos to.
@lazydazefarm: I don't think that anyone has a definitive answer to your question. https://community.etsy.com/t5/Announcements/We-re-making-updates-to-size-and-ratio-for-listing-image... does not provide any real specifics and https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/115015663347-Requirements-and-Best-Practices-for-Images-in-Y... is also vague when it comes to listing images.
@BagmakerSupply How strange. If they aren't sure how are we suppose to know.
I can't tell you what size, I just know since they messed up my shop pictures by making them square I have to go to my file for the item and rework the thumbnail pictures by putting a white border around them to make them smaller for the thumbnail. If the "Adjust Size" slider actually worked to make pictures smaller besides just larger I would use that.
@CuriousityShopYes, I tried to use their tool to adjust the size and it just made it worse. I guess I could make the border like you did at least for the first photo. The weird thing is they're only cropped on our shop page. When I do a search for my items they're fine on the search pages.
You may have to experiment since etsy is being silent about specifics.
One thing I have noticed tho... Etsy wants square images. That's all well and good. But even if you upload a square image... etsy will still "adjust" the image and it will appear to be somewhat zoomed in your shop. Rather poor coding...
@SewlyButtonsSo even if I go forward with any new listings, doing them in square mode will still result in them being cut off by etsy? Why would they do that and what are we suppose to do? They took listings that were great and make them appear that we don't know how to do them. It seems they need new tech people. Why couldn't they just leave well enough alone. I've had this shop since 2007 and my photos have been fine.
Yes I am very frustrated. I don't know how to resize my photos and the thumbnail sizer does not adjust to proper square size that they want. I don't know what to do and they look terrible!
@cynthiatessmerI don't know what to do either. I don't even want to add new items since I don't have a clue how to size the photos. Why would they be so silent about how to do this. Every time they change something it's like some big secret about why they do it. Such as the reserves they put shops in and won't tell them why like it's a secret.
Here's my tale of woe. I took one of my worst looking pictures and made it square. It looked 'itchin' great in the adjust thumbnail thingy, so uploaded listing. Picture looks exactly the same in the listing as it did before. Tried it twice now with the same results.
@NoFrogsAllowed So here we sit with no answer whatsoever about how to take our photos. What a mess. The strangest thing is they're okay on the search pages. I guess etsy wants our shops to look absolutely horrible.
Here's one thing that "worked" for me a while back when they were testing the square images and made just about everyones images looked zoomed. It worked, but no way do I have the time to do this for all my images.
I took my first image, the one I wanted to use as a thumbnail and adjusted it. It was a rectangle, so i added white space top and bottom, enough to make it square. I replaced my rectangular image with my new adjusted square image. It sort of worked. The thumbnail image in my shop showed up as my original rectangle. Made NO sense to have to do that but whatever.
Far as I'm concerned, if etsy is OK with so many images looking like crap, who am I to quarrel with it? For sure I'm not spending my time adjusting any more images to make them look good for shoppers. This is etsys mess, not mine. Unfortunately, I bear the consequences...
If you want to see an example of the result, I added the white space top and bottom to the last item in the first row here:

@SewlyButtons You're right this is on etsy. They have something not right in their coding in our shops. We can't fix this because our photos are are still showing fine in the search. If we try to fix our shop then our photos will be messed up in search I suppose. I'm going forward and forget how they look in my shop I guess even though it bothers me so much. Our shops now look absolutely horrible.
I totally recommend you to google "iloveimg resize" and then resize the picture in any dims
I agree @lazydazefarm. The photos on the Etsy app on phone look just fine. I think very few look on laptop or other than phone these days. I manage my shop on laptop so it is not pleasant, but I am going to leave it alone. Times have changed!
@cynthiatessmer: "I think very few look on laptop or other than phone these days." You may be correct for your shop, but only about 20% of our visitors are using a mobile device.
