Scammer impersonating Etsy and asking for email addresses and card details

Jump to solution

Hello, I'm new to Etsy and in my first 24 hours I have had several messages from people impersonating Etsy and asking fro my email address and card details. they advise that my shop has been suspended following a customer order as it alerted them that my payment information wasn't set up. They're quire convincing as they come form and Etsy.com domain. Is this the normal drill for new sellers? Support seems no where to be found this afternoon too

@BelieveALittle  I am very sorry that as a new Seller, you are being bombarded with this garbage. Scammers have swarmed here unfortunately, targeting new Sellers as well as seasoned ones. These thieves are also using "Verification" as one of their scams, posing as Etsy Staff/Support, etc.   When you receive a LEGIT Message from Etsy Support/Staff, etc., it will appear in the "From Etsy" Folder (in Messages). If it isn't there, Mark the Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for S Seller). *Note: Sellers using the new Blue App, will not see the "From Etsy" Folder (which doesn't make sense).
(I'll be back with the Announcement about the "From Etsy" Folder; currently this resides under Past Announcements). Actually this Announcement should be updated to state that the Blue App does not have the "From Etsy" Folder.

Many scammers are also posing as "Buyers", stating they need your email for an Order. They don't, Etsy already has it. When you receive a LEGIT Order, it will appear in "Orders & Shipping" (Left Column of Shop Dashboard); if it isn't there, you have no Order.  Mark the scammer's Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for S Seller).  And never click on links or engage with them.

Currently there is a Pinned Announcement at the top of the Forum, "Protect Your Account From Scammers" (nineteen posted the link above).
I hope this is helpful to you.

They have been aware of these scammers for months, there should be warnings in your dashboard.

There are also warnings in the forums, I am glad you were aware, many seem not and hand over their details

The only way to protect yourself from these scammers is to view your messages on your desktop computers OR visit the Etsy web site on your mobile browser.
Etsy now has a "From Etsy" tab in your message area but you cannot view this on the Etsy Seller app or the regular Etsy app.

You mentioned that your messages are coming from a Etsy domain and I will bet they are not. These scammers are using the Etsy logos and changing their profile account names to Etsy or Etsy Staff, etc to trick people.

@CowboyPosterCo

I too have noted these scammers keep using shop names like "etsy staff", Etsy stuff" , "Etsy support". Since a shop name can supposedly be used only once how do these imposters keep using those same names over and over?

Etsy will find and kill a scammer account and then another pops up with the SAME name .

@ThePurplePuppy those are user account names, not shop names. Only shop names are restricted to one time use.

Thank you!  I just keep seeing people saying they got a message from "etsy staff" or "etsy support" so thought that was the shop name the scammers were using.

@ThePurplePuppy

@Amaradorn is correct.

and everyone on etsy can change their name to zoie if they want to.

or thepurplepuppy.

if etsy would remove the ability to change names to etsy-anything or tech support etc.

then the scammers would have to come up with something that does not sound or look as real.

@nineteen27

You wrote exactly what I was thinking. IF Etsy would block the use of their name in anything not actually FROM them it would certainly help.

I am not a tech but this does not seem difficult to me. After all they block "amber", "ivory", "Cuba" along with lots of other stuff so why not "Etsy"?

@ThePurplePuppy

etsy also says you cannot use the word *etsy* in your shop name.

but bazillions of sellers do.

etsy could block it if they wanted to.

i know for a fact that etsy will not let you use certain cussing words in your shop name... so if they can block those.

they could block *etsy* too.

@ThePurplePuppy @nineteen27  I did wonder whether they don't restrict that word because someone might have the name 'Betsy' (for example) however it's easy to validate whether the word 'Etsy' is isolated or part of another word (at least it is for user names - maybe it's more difficult for shop names because of the lack of spaces).

@Amaradorn

They sure didn't worry about it when they "forbid" Amber. I remember one gal who was NAMED Amber having her entire shop restricted because her name was a part of her shop name. So I am sure they sort it out if they wanted to!

@ThePurplePuppy I know, what a fiasco that was! Maybe they want to avoid that sorry of thing happening again however I'm sure a programmer could overcome that issue if they just invested some time in it.

They come from conversations@mail.etsy.com which is identical to the address from technical support

the Etsy automated emails came from noreply@mail.etsy.com and others from emails@mail.etsy.com so the scammer ones are not so easily identifiable

@BelieveALittle: "They're quire convincing as they come form and Etsy.com domain." Are you referring to the eMail copy of an Etsy message or an actual free standing eMail?

If you look through the various threads you'll see that there are all sorts of issues with the Etsy apps and the consensus is that sellers really need to manage their orders and messages through a browser (even their mobile browser).

Be sure to mark the message as SPAM so that it does not affect your stats. Unless something has changed recently, you can only mark a message as SPAM using the buyer app or a browser, the option is not available in the seller app.
