Scam message

Jump to solution

Hello everyone, I have received scam message with Google link recently. It did seem suspicious to me but still I clicked it just to see what it is. As soon as I clicked there was a zip file downloaded to my computer. When I clicked on the zip file there was another file to asking me to run it, I did not run it and deleted after that.

So now I just want to know that, is there any threat to my computer and personal data and what should I do ?

There have been reports of scammers sending links which when clicked on will install malware on your device which can be used to hack your accounts.

You now need to run a full scan using anti-virus software. If possible get an IT professional to help and make sure your pc is not infected. The fact that you did not initiate the installation is encouraging but it's best to make sure nothing was installed automatically in the background.

Once your pc has been thoroughly checked, change your Etsy password and enable 2 factor authentication (remember to save the back up codes).

Keep an eye on your sign in log (check periodically) to make sure no one else is accessing your Etsy account.

Report the user (who sent the link) to Etsy or mark the message as SPAM.

In future - do not click on links in Etsy messages or emails (even if it looks like it came from Etsy or any other official website). Also beware scanning QR codes if you don't know where it's taking you.

Run your virus checker and if you are in the mind to open random zip files make a note of the name so you can find out what you may have installed before deleting it

How does one go about checking their sign in log?

Etsy provides such a facility or are you talking about something to do with Windows?

If the former, I'm interested. If the latter, I couldn't care less.

Thx in advance.

@StickIt2M Click on Your Account avatar > Account Settings > Security. Scroll down a little to ''review your sign in history''.

Hi,

I received a message with a link in it that was supposed to be a list of the products the buyer is interested in and without much thinking I clicked on it, it downloaded a zip file on my mobile phone, do you think that it is infected? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

Depending on your device (iOS or Android) you may need to run a malware scan on it.

I use an iPhone so don't "need" to have virus apps but I do just in case. My cousin has an Android OS and constantly has issues.

For PC/Laptop users, good free programs to use are:

Malwarebytes
CCleaner

Both have free versions and can be found using a google search. They may have mobile device apps but if they do, I'm not aware of them since I never click anything in email, text or messages.

I'd post the links but that seems like ignoring my own advice LOL

This scam is still doing the rounds, received two in the past 2 days. They say that want a product for 7 family members then say they want a product for co-works at the bottom of the message, with a google link for the "product" they want. Is there a way or reporting? I've moved everything to spam and not opened or clicked any links.

I received multiple spam messages overnight.  They try to lure you into clicking because they want to buy your products that are shown in the link they provide.  Don’t ever click it!

I wish Etsy was more proactive to verify accounts before a user can send messages to keep the spammers from being able to do this.   They can remove the user, but the link and message is still there for users to click on.  I get that they want new users to buy, but there has to be a way to allow that, but other parts of the site can not be accessed until the account is verified.
