So, I'm diving in to resize sooooo many of my pictures, and the thing is, in edit, my thumbnail looks just fine, go to publish and my pics are still cropped.
Do you apply the change?
I really don't crop or change my photos much. Pretty much they are good to go. The thumbnail I do use but I have to remember to hit save.
Your photos look good to me.
They look fine to me,too.
This is because we are not in the test.
Are you resizing because of the way some shops are seeing new crops? I'm sure it's either a glitch or a test, so I would hold off!
I agree. It's just chasing your tail.
You'll change all your photos just to find that the test has been scrapped.
Same problem here - all my thumbnails were fine and all of the sudden I can only see a fraction of items when I view my shop - in "edit" mode listings and thumbnails are fine??
Me too. It's driving me crazy and I wonder now if I have to change over 500 listing photos!
Don't re-size any photos right now. The changes you see are because you're in a test. Most of us still see photos in the usual proportions.
Did you not read any of the replies in the other thread? If this turns out to be just a test or a glitch, you're going to have to resize them again.
Why are you resizing? There's been no confirmation by Etsy that they are changing the format. Might be a glitch, might be a test, might stay, might go. Who knows.
Save yourself the trouble and don't resize because you might end up having to resize them yet again. I've been on Etsy long enough to know that ignoring these things is best practice until it's official, in writing, from ETSY, that there is a new requirement, LOL!
Etsy's tests only affect a small percentage of users so the likelihood is that the majority of buyers see your current images as rectangles, not squares.
Moving forward it might be wise to take photos that would allow for a square crop but I personally wouldn't take the time to change anything already uploaded.
@BeadWithBugs - I think there is a test going on. I'm not resizing my photos because when the test is over, I'd just have to do it again.
I find it helps to have 3 to 4" of blank space around your big image, then it won't cut anything off in the thumbnail.
@AAANativeArts that's a wise idea - I guess because most of my items are square (pillows) that's what they have ended up being all along! : )
As of now, it seems to be user based - meaning if you are in the test, if that's what it is (they've done this in the past) - you see the pics in your own shops, as well as others in the cropped square format.
I'm not in the test right now - I see everyone's pics as the normal rectangle, nothing cut off, that I can tell. If you are in the test, my pics probably look square to you. So that means some of your Buyers will see the square pics, some won't.
I would strongly suggest waiting until you know for sure this is the way it will be going forward. Maybe it will stay - both the mobile shopping app, and the mobile browser site show square cropped pics in shop thumbnails, and they have for a long time.
Oh no…
It’s best to take the forums and some forum posters opinions with a large grain of salt.
Testing is just that, testing. Where they flip and flop things around.
Best to wait until the dust settles, or a proper Etsy announcement is made.
There were a couple of posts of people who talked to "Support" on chat, and were told to change their pics to square.
I can also advise people take advice from Etsy Chat employees with a grain of salt.
I agree. The misinformation supplied by chat can be rather frightening.
All of our perfectly cropped main photos have now been zoomed in on even further cutting off parts of our products in almost every listing !
Is every seller now going to fix their main picture for every one of their listings.... Most likely not (huge task for sellers with a lot of items).
The Etsy site will have an overall poorer looking appearance as photos sitewide will look like they have all been zoomed in on way too much!
Buyers do not want to see less of an item in a main photo they want to see more! Hopefully this is only a test.....
I agree with the others -- I know someone on chat told you that you need to, but it's too much work to do unless you are 100% sure it needs to be done. (Especially when they seem to be cropping even the square photos.) Advice given on chat can vary from person to person.
I am in the test, so I can only see square photos. Yours look fine to me.
What I would suggest is, for any new photos you take, make a 4x3 and a 1x1 version. That's what I plan to do.
