I sell digital products and two days in a row now, a customer has bought the same product twice. This isn’t intentional as there’s no reason they’d need to purchase the same digital product more than once, since they receive the files immediately after purchase and can download as many times as they want to. It’s happened two times now in two days (two different customers) which is making me wonder if there’s some kind of bug where customers may not be seeing the ‘Thanks for your purchase’ page after placing an order, causing them to purchase again?! I’ve refunded both customers but just want to make sure it’s not some kind of scam!
In both cases, there were two order numbers and the payment did go into my account.
Has anyone had this happen before? Hoping it just a coincidence.
Maybe they want to share that pattern with somebody else and don't want to violate copyright laws by copying the file. If you are serious about knowing why you will have to ask the buyer. But I wouldn't bother until the buyers say something first.

Issue a refund with a note about the option to download more than once.

I had the same thought, maybe the buyer didn't know they could download it as many times as they wanted.
I have bought the same digital item more than once, it was when I was looking for images for an upcoming project and buying images from several sellers at once. When I got a dozen or so in my cart I would check out and start a new cart. On this particular occasion I would see an item I had checked out in the first batch and not realised that I had already bought it. I only noticed when I was ready to download the files.
If the buyer contacts you and says it was a mistake, cancel one of the sales, that automatically also refunds. Otherwise, I believe it is likely an honest way to gift the other purchase.

I have a feeling it might me a glitch. Every now and then I have this happen with a few customers, one after the other and I have also been wondering why it happens. Yesterday I had a customer buy the same item three times within a few minutes. Obviously I cancel the repeat order but unfortunately for me the customer had clicked on an Etsy ad so it cost me three lots of off-site ad fees, Etsy don't refund in this instance. Shortly after this a second customer bought the same item twice. I can understand if someone buys an item and some months later accidentally repeat buys but when it happens two or three times in a day, it seems a bit odd.
