QR Code Scam

I made a sale this morning, and within 6 minutes of recieving the notice I recieved another message, supposedly from Etsy with the correct details of the order, including an image, saying that to recieve payment for it, I needed to verify my payment details and scan a QR code in order to do so, at which point the form requests bank details and other contact information.
I was a little skeptical and did a bit of research on Google only to find out that it is indeed a scam.

My question is... how did the scammer know about the order?  How were they able to respond so fast, and send me the fake message within just a few minutes? Does Etsy have a serious security breach, where the scammers can see in real time what is being ordered and from which Etsy shop?

Re: QR Code Scam

No idea how they knew you had a sale but do you not see this above where you would reply to the message?

"To stay protected, stay on Etsy. Never follow links to other sites, and don’t share contact, account, or financial info with anyone in Messages. Learn how to spot spam."

New sellers have been receiving spam messages since last year and Etsy is trying to stop people from replying to SPAM messages. Please note that if the message is from Etsy, it will appear in the FROM ETSY folder in your messages. Move these messages to SPAM.

Re: QR Code Scam

No, it does not necessarily mean a security breach.

No doubt they are using some kind of scalping software, the bots will detect the sale instantly and your shop name.

But you should have this warning in your messenger, just above where you type

To stay protected, stay on Etsy. Never follow links to other sites, and don’t share contact, account, or financial info with anyone in Messages.

Re: QR Code Scam

I would guess that they placed the order - so they have all the details. Be sure to send the message to SPAM and CANCEL the order.

Re: QR Code Scam

This was my first thought also, especially if it was a small purchase.

Re: QR Code Scam

Or it's 2 people, 1 placing the order, the other doing the scamming.  When they net someone, it's probably a good return on their $50 investment.

Re: QR Code Scam

@LazenbyPhotography - Was the "message" with the QR code an Etsy message or email? You said "another message" but Etsy orders don't come via messages. My apologies if you use "message" and "email" interchangeably; to me they're completely different things.

Is there really an order in your Orders queue? If yes, is there $$ in your Etsy payment account? If there's $$ there (and especially if the order isn't over $250), I'd go ahead and ship the order.

If the order is from a country which is notorious for scams (not that they can't happen anywhere, but they seem to be more prevalent in certain countries), I might think twice ... but unless someone else posts a compelling reason to cancel the order, I'd go ahead and ship it.

You've had 48 sales (or 47 before this one if it's legit), so you're not quite new ... but if you haven't taken time to learn how you receive Etsy orders and how you get paid, etc., you might want to read up (or at least ask questions) about how that works on Etsy.

Re: QR Code Scam

I don’t know a lot about scamming and what all can be done with computers but I would think if someone was computer smart enough and knew how to set up scams worldwide then they would know how to do something that would either let them know when a shop got a sale or set it up to automatically to send the message.
Is this possible? I don’t know, I still have problems downloading music. My daughter did explain the QR code but I have no idea how to use it so I guess they would be out of luck with me on that one.

Re: QR Code Scam

Maybe they placed the order from a hacked account or using a stolen credit card. I might wait a few days before sending it or contact the buyer with an innocent sounding question (maybe check their address) and see what happens. Just bear in mind that not all Etsy users have their message notification emails activated.

Re: QR Code Scam

That is a possibility.

I'd definitely make sure the address was good on the sale, and wait a day or two to ship just to make sure it's legit.
