Printify has stopped integrating with my Etsy store

Jump to solution

I just started a new Etsy store and successfully published 4 items created on Printify. Then, for no reason I could discern, i started getting publishing errors and my products would no longer publish to Etsy. I was on customer support chat with them for 3 hours, trying everything--nothing worked. They escalated my issue to their technical team but could not give me any idea when I would get an answer. It's been a day already, no word despite my following up.

Has anyone here had this problem? Would it make sense for me to just delete the store in Printify--not my Printify account, I have other stores attached to it--and then re-create it? There are only 4 items there so it wouldn't take long. As it is now, I can't do anything at all.

@UptownSoundwaves Sorry about the relisting fees. I will take note of this for future reference. I guess this is a 'last resort' solution and not a good idea if you have more than a few listings. Also note that if you have listings which have sold and then relisted, implementing a fix in this way means you will lose the sold history on your old broken listings which you then had to delete. However since you are a new shop with no sales yet this is not so much of a problem.

It looks like you have 4 tees listed, are those the 4 you're talking about?

Yes, those are the ones. But it seems to be working now--I will post the update to my original question.

Try asking the question in the official Facebook group called Printify POD Rockstars. I do know it does happen occasionally, and I think people were reporting this type of glitch recently on that group's page.

Sometimes when Etsy updates the API or the other party updates their app you have to reconnect the app with your Etsy shop.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions! I got it to work after a day, no thanks to Printify support, by disconnecting from Etsy and then reconnecting (i.e., "turn it off and then turn it on again"). This duplicated my listings, so I had to delete the extras, and I may get charged listing fees for that, not sure. But I only had 4 items in the store, so it wasn't a big problem. When I let Printify know, they told me I shouldn't have done this--but they didn't come up with any other solution. They told me that their technical people are still working on figuring out why it happened, and will get back to me (not holding my breath).

I sincerely hope this doesn't happen again. I know Printify is know for their reliability, so I'm trying not to get too paranoid.

I would think (based on the four listings you have) that there is an IP problem with counterfeiting and infringement.

I wouldn't think Printify would go along with such listings.

What makes you think they're counterfitted?

They are all original artwork made by me (I'm an artist) and I researched all the images I'm working with (at the Library of Congress and NY Public Library websites--not Wikipedia, who are often wrong) to make sure they're in the public domain.

I see very many listings a on Etsy that are not legal, and I am making 100% sure that everything I sell is legit. I've had my own experiences with copyright infringement and never want to subject anyone else to that hell.

Printify does flag images as possible IP infringements, yes.

@UptownSoundwaves I did a quick Google search and found this information about California; other states may have similar laws.

California Civil Code Section 3344 prohibits the use of a person's name, voice, signature, photograph, or likeness for commercial purposes (including selling goods or services) without their prior written consent.

California law also recognizes a post-mortem right of publicity, protecting the commercial value of a deceased celebrity's likeness for 70 years after their death

As for "original artwork," did you design the sheet music cover you're using on that shirt? This sheet music was published in 1917, so you must be well over 108 years old!

Oh my gosh, you people. Copyright doesn't last forever. Not that I need to explain myself here, but I will, because this is the internet where everyone wants to be right, and you're wrong:

1. Baltimore Blues sheet music design: Not under copyright protection. Here's what the internet tells me about California copyright law (because I did a bit more research than "a quick Google search"), and these laws are similar in other states:

"In California, the duration of copyright protection generally lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years, for works created after 1978. For anonymous works, pseudonymous works, or works made for hire, the term is 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever expires first.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

For works created on or after January 1, 1978:
  • Life of the author plus 70 years: This is the standard term for works created by a single individual.

  • 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter: This applies to anonymous works, pseudonymous works, or works made for hire.

For works created before January 1, 1978:
  • The duration is more complex and depends on whether the work was published or registered before that date.

  • Generally, these works have a term of 95 years from publication if the copyright was still valid in 1978.

Key points:
  • Public Domain:
When copyright protection expires, a work enters the public domain, meaning it can be used by anyone without permission.

  • Renewal:
For works copyrighted before 1978, renewal of copyright was sometimes required, but this is no longer the case for works created after 1978.

  • Works for Hire:
These are works created by an employee within the scope of their employment, or commissioned under a written agreement. Copyright for these works is held by the employer or commissioning party."

This image was published in 1917, so copyright lasts for 95 years--so copyright expired in 2012. As it says above, when copyright protection expires, a work enters the public domain, meaning it can be used by anyone without permission.

2. Source image for Big Bill Broonzy photo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Big_Bill_Broonzy#/media/File:Big_Bill_Broonzy_(1951_publ..., clearly marked public domain
And since I created the original artwork, I own the copyright to that artwork.

3. Source image for B.B. King photo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:B._B._King_in_Ann_Arbor.jpg "This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published in the United States between 1930 and 1977, inclusive, without a copyright notice."
And since I created the original artwork, I own the copyright to that artwork.

4. G.W. Bridge: My original photo and artwork (therefore I own the copyright). As a government-owned public structure, the George Washington Bridge falls into the category of landmarks that are typically permissible to photograph and sell images of, particularly for editorial or artistic use.

5. 12-Bar Blues t-shirt: My original artwork (therefore I own the copyright).

---

In any case, Printify had no problem with the content of these images. The issue was technical, and happily has been solved.

Regarding the California postmortem right of publicity:

Yes, it does exist, and may even apply to images in the public domain. However, artwork falls under the category of "expressive use" and is generally protected.
 See here: https://www.documentary.org/column/raising-dead-understanding-post-mortem-rights-publicity#:~:text=F...

This is a very interesting article that points out the differences between state laws on the subject. In NY's version, for example, you need to be living in the state at time of death.

If the estates of Big Bill Broozy or B.B. King objet to my use of the image, or if course if Etsy does, I will take them down.

P.S. I know your comments are not meant to be argumentative or mean. You're looking out for me as a new seller, and I appreciate that. Rest assured I don't want to take money out of anyone's pocket, particularly a musician's, and so did research about these issues before I made any artwork.

Thank you for understanding that my comments were intended to be helpful and perhaps keep you out of legal complications. And I was honest that I didn't spend hours researching the topic. I saw something with a California Code and assumed it was relevant.

Good luck to you!
