Potential spam

Jump to solution

Could someone please clarify the process after an item has been sold. I've been inundated (which seems odd) with messages stating person had trouble finishing order, or asking for email address.

All messages seem generic and I just wondered on what the correct process was once am order has been made.

Hello,

Etsy is actively engaged in preventing scammers from targeting our community members. If you receive a suspicious message, please proceed with caution. Etsy Support will never ask you to provide personal information via Etsy Messages, such as your email address or password. Any legitimate message from us will show in your "From Etsy" folder.

If you receive a suspicious message, here’s how to report it:

  1. Sign in to Etsy.com and go to Your Account.
  2. Go to Messages
  3. Select the suspicious message from your inbox.
  4. Choose Mark as Spam.

You’ll find examples of common scammer techniques and phishing messages here in our Help Center. Read our Account Security Checklist in the Seller Handbook for more steps you can take to protect your account.

You do not have any sales.  These are all scam messages!  Unfortunately they target new shops.

Always log in to your Shop Manager to see if you have any genuine sales or genuine messages from Etsy which you will find in the "From Etsy" folder in your messages.  The scammers pretend they are from Customer Support and try to get you divulge your bank details and transfer funds.  Never click on any link in an email.

Mark those messages as spam.

Nope nope nope, scam. Mark as spam. After an item sells it will appear in your open orders section of the shop manager. No need to provide email or any additional info to the buyer.

As mentioned above, they are scams.

This Etsy help center article provides some information about what actually happens when you sell an item on Etsy: https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/115015710308-What-to-Do-After-You-Sell-an-Item?segment=selli...

The first thing that will happen is that the number (1) will appear in the house next to your icon.

Then where it says "sales" it will change from (0) to (1).

Etsy already has your email address so they won't ask you for it.

Neither will they ask for your bank/card information or how much money you have on that account.

Remember, you aren't paying for anything so how much money you have is not relevant to getting a sale.

As has been repeated numerous times in this forum, you are a prime target for scammers because yours is a new shop, and your shop is not finished giving it an amateurish look. Create and upload a banner appropriate to what you're selling, declare your location, create a Shop Announcement to provide a brief overview of your shop, create an About section to share the inspiration behind your creations, set up your policies and frequently asked questions, develop more specific Titles for your listings, and provide more details in your descriptions (medium, sizes in inches, etc.). Best to you.

@Bespokelaserbyjack
Did you notice the message Etsy put on your message page?
It's right below any message you get and right above where you reply warning you NOT to follow links to other sites and to not share financial info through message.

"To stay protected, stay on Etsy. Never follow links to other sites, and don’t share contact, account, or financial info with anyone in Messages. Learn how to spot spam."

If a message from Etsy it would be in the FROM ETSY section. If it's not there it's not Etsy.

Any time anything needs updating on your account, you'll have a notice on your dashboard/finance page.
If it is not there, nothing needs updating.

If you receive an actual order, you will see it in your "Orders and Shipping" section and you will receive an email from Etsy notifying you that you have a sale, and there will be a notification in your dashboard as well.
