I received a message "from Etsy", naming a potential buyer and giving me 24 hours to respond "yes" to prove I was an actual seller or my brand new Etsy shop would be closed. I did respond "yes" but I also emailed customer support that I was concerned the email was fraud. I got an automated, generic response on detecting fraud that was less than helpful. As a newbie, can someone explain how I can know for sure a message has, in fact, been generated by Etsy? TIA
in your messages section, there is a "From Etsy" folder on the left hand side
If it is not in that folder, it is not from etsy.
Mark it as spam
So, the first one I got asked me to confirm my email, and I got an email as well saying to confirm.I looked in the folder "from Etsy" as you suggested and there were no messages. Since I confirmed my email, is my etsy account compromised?
@AllWiredUp229 if you only gave them your email address then your Etsy account is not compromised (they would need your password too). However you are now at risk of receiving scam emails directly to your email inbox rather than through Etsy messages - so Etsy can't stop those.
Just be careful if you receive any emails which look like they come from Etsy - don't click on links in emails. Always go directly to yoru shop manager to check for sales or notifications.
This is a scam. Thieves are pretending to be Etsy staff. This scam has been ongoing since at least July 2023. Messages from Etsy will show up in your mailbox titled "From Etsy".
Don’t respond or provide any personal or financial information. Don't click any links that take you off the Etsy site. Send the message to spam.
If you have provided any financial information, immediately contact your bank to report fraud on your account!

Scams are currently rampant.
SCAM!! Mark as spam and carry on.
@AllWiredUp229 Since you just gave your email (which Etsy already has) - you can expect more scam emails to your direct email to carry on the scam. Just mark as spam in your email, and don't follow through with their demands.
Here's how it can end up -
