Photos on website vs thumbnail view

Does anyone know why my photos on the thumbnail when i list are not the same on the Etsy website? The pictures on the website seem to have dropped down? Example: picture of sewing pattern, i adjust the thumbnail to show just the center of the pattern with the picture of outfit, when I look on the website it has "dropped down" and is showing top of envelope.  Help! lol  Thanks!

Re: Photos on website vs thumbnail view

@Allyssecondattic  As I look at the thumbnail photos in your Shop, I think they look great (using a desktop computer). When Etsy said they were changing the rectangular photos to squares, some of my items got chopped off.  Etsy also said to format photos for both square and rectangle. I didn't mess with mine, but on my Home Page, I'd see some of my photos where the item is chopped off at a certain point. Then in other photos they look good (including in search results). This is the only thing I can think of, pertaining to you question.

Wish I could have been more helpful.

Etsy has changed to square photos.  Go to the listing and click on the photos and select the square template on the right and your image should line up okay.

Wouldn't doing that cut off the sides of a rectangular photo?

@DaysofYoreTreasures   Have you tried it?

Yes, I just tried it. A square photo stays the same, a landscape photo has the sides cut off and a portrait photo has the top & bottom cut off.

Re: Photos on website vs thumbnail view

Here’s what I think is happening.

Etsy has two display formats, 5:4 (landscape) and 1:1 (square). If you upload a square image, Etsy must first crop off the top and bottom to make a landscape image. Then from that cropped image, Etsy crops out a square image by cutting off the sides. The result may be an image that looks blown up with missing content.

You can prevent this problem when preparing the image for uploading.

Create your image with a 5:4 ratio. Make sure the product would fit nicely in an imaginary square in the middle of the image. (The imaginary square should be the same height as the image.)

For example, if your image is 2,000 pixels (width) x 1,600 pixels (height), the product should fit inside an imaginary square of 1,600 x 1,600 pixels.

With these specifications, Etsy won’t have to crop the top and bottom to create the landscape image because you already provided it, and the product will still display attractively when Etsy crops the sides for square display.

Note: If you follow Etsy’s incorrect advice and use a 4:3 ratio rather than a 5:4 ratio, Etsy will still need to crop for the landscape view. It won’t be as bad as uploading a square image, but it will still occur.

When I’m editing an image for upload, I actually draw a square around the product just before cropping. The square is a temporary guide for cropping. Then I crop the image in a 5:4 ratio so the top and bottom of the cropped area line up with the square. I make sure the square is centered within the cropped area with equal space on the right and left sides. Finally, I remove the square. Done. Now the image works fine for both landscape and square display.

(full disclosure: I have some older primary images for which I have not yet applied this technique, and I probably won’t bother because they are close enough. However, they are all 5:4 ratio, and when Etsy’s auto cropping for square display cuts off the sides, the product still is either fully or mostly displayed.)

Desert Chains, thank you for the valuable info. I did not know Etsy changed image specifications. Do you happen to know where I can find the post about it? Thank you, again. Nancy

Re: Photos on website vs thumbnail view

It looks like you are using vertical (portrait) images. Etsy said to format photos for both square and rectangle but in reality you can only use one format or the other.
When you adjust the thumbnail it takes your vertical image & creates a rectangular thumbnail by cutting off the top & bottom. Then it creates a square image for your shop by cutting off the sides of the thumbnail. That is what creates the oddly zoomed in look.
I suggest trying a new listing with a square or rectangular image, not using the adjust thumbnail, then checking how it looks in your shop and in search after publishing.

Re: Photos on website vs thumbnail view

Paying attention to this conversation as I am having a similar problem. I tried to adjust settings as mentioned here and tried to upload picture to my listing again. Its not working for me. Its a long vintage coat and I can't get the picture that appears on Etsy to fit right. Only shows mostly the top part of the coat. Not sure what am I doing wrong? Having a hard time with this. Any idea.

@LeathersNLinens That coat is gorgeous!
My suggestions are to put it more on the diagonal with the collar further up to the left hand corner and stand back a little more so there is more space, especially on the left and right. Best of luck!

Re: Photos on website vs thumbnail view

Ok thanks for the comment about the coat and trying to help me with this. Put it more at an angle you mean? I have another one laying down and that fitted just fine. I didn't have to adjust anything. Now I would need to redo the picture or is there a way to do this? Not all that adept with picture taking and settings. I get quite frustrated and find it time consuming.

Yes, I did mean to put the coat on more of an angle.
Other than taking a new photo with more space around the item, you could take that first photo of the coat and add some blank space around it with a photo editing tool.
I'm afraid that I am not adept at photo editing either, so hopefully someone else will chime in with advice on how to do it.

Thanks. Will try to play with it again and see if I can work it out. Maybe need to take a picture from a bit further away and work with that. I see coats on here and they're not cropped off like this.

It's a learning experience for sure. Had same problem with some other pics and it was a small piece being displayed. Now we have to watch even the angle and how far from picture. Always did but not this specific. Oh my.
