Hello to all.
I noticed that materials, except "paper" have disappeared from all my listings. I fill them out in the listing form but they are nowhere to be found. I don't know whether it's a recent development but I'm pretty sure I've seen all the materials I normally use. There should be "ink, watercolours, rice paper, backing rice paper". Sometimes, there is backing board, silk, a few other things. But now there is nothing.
Does anyone know what's the problem? I have not contacted Etsy support yet.
Yes, only paper is showing. It says surface: paper.
I know that you can only choose one attribute for material in the details part but if you add your materials at the end after the tags then you can add in several and then they all show up. Whatever you put in the materials at the bottom replaces what you might have selected above. I'm guessing you already had put your materials there if you have listed many but I don't understand why they are not showing up. Did you put a comma between each one?
Yes, there is a comma and everything in the materials at the bottom space.
@JJewellerySuppliesUK attributes will over-ride the materials list. Not the other way round.
@JJewellerySuppliesUK If you don't mind - could you please check if you can see all the images and materials on this listing? I just updated (retyped) all the materials. Did a listing audit on erank and it shows that most of my listings, not just this one, have no images.

Thank you.
@YasaMT It's the same, it just says Surface: Paper.
Maybe leave all materials attributes blank above the tags to see if it will pick up the later ones? I did check one of my listings and it is listing my materials as usual.
@JJewellerySuppliesUK I just did and it's just empty. I'll contact support.
I just checked other sellers with paintings - it's very random. Some have all materials listed, some have only paper. I avoided oil paintings to skip canvas as materials.
I don't know what's going on. Must some new test gone haywire.
@JJewellerySuppliesUK Thanks for your help!
If anyone is interested - it seems to be a glitch that came with the new form. Technical support got back to me and said they can see the materials just fine. But since the visibility varies depending on the country, they are working on it. The support will be posting an update on the forum.
Additionally, materials are completely absent when you look at the listings on the phone. In my case listing details only include "handmade" and dimensions.
No offense, but I don't believe any of this. I don't doubt this is what Etsy told you. But the glitch is not new if the form is months old. Etsy is not working on fixing any glitches and support never posts an update. Typical Etsy.
If you set the 'material' attribute then it overrides anything in the 'materials list'. It's been this way for a long time.
Also - any edits made to active listings are currently taking a while to update. You might have to wait 10 minutes before seeing a change reflected in the active listing.
@Amaradorn I tried both, the only thing that's showing is paper (surface) or nothing. Both "surface" and "materials" are optional fields. But materials don't override surface. But I've seen both surface and materials before in my listings. The glitch only showed up recently.
@YasaMT do you have an example of a listing where you have removed the attribute 'surface: paper'?
@Amaradorn try this one https://yasamt.etsy.com/listing/1455008065
I just removed surface. You should see ink, watercolours, rice paper, backing rice paper in materials section.
@YasaMT on that Listing I see: Materials: ink, watercolours, rice paper, backing rice paper
So it worked but maybe you are not waiting long enough for the change to update.
The materials list is below the tags on the listing form.
If you use certain attributes then they will over-ride whatever you put in the materials list.
Remove all attributes which are related to materials (e.g. Surface) and then see if the materials list shows up. (It has 2 tiny stars next to it on the active listing - but I think that's just for jewellery).
@Amaradorn Yes, that's what I did. I cleared the surface. I know where the materials list is. I'm including it into every listing.
I'll leave it as is for now and see if support replies. Thanks for your help.
@Amaradorn there is nothing in my list. I'll check tomorrow, maybe it updates overnight. Maybe support does something for once.
Thanks again.
The materials updated overnight - it now shows the ink, watercolours, etc. Confirms what you said above that materials section overrides the surface. The app doesn't show anything at all, materials are blank. But I won't bother with this any longer. I'm already spending more time in front of the computer instead of in the studio and outside. I had to cancel en plein air painting session because I had to beautify and update these listings. Seriously, if Etsy's goal is to stop creators from creating - they are close to achieving it.
Have a nice weekend and thanks for your help.
@YasaMT I'm glad you got it figured out. Unfortunately the apps are a bit buggy.
