Massachusetts Tax - How do I remit tax I collected at a fair?

Jump to solution

Hi everyone

I have registered my business and I have a sales and use tax permit in Massachusetts. I also have a mass tax account I’ve been filing zero for my ST 9s because Etsy has done it all for me.

Now I’m venturing into the craft fair that I’m going to have to collect sales tax. When I do that, how do I remit the tax I collected? Do I do it annually? Do I just pay it right away after the fair? Ect..

Any help would be appreciated

In Massachusetts, you will most likely need to file quarterly.  Log into the DOR website with your information and it you will see when the filing is due.  I've had it quarterly and then requested it be changed to annual.  FYI, the customer service is fantastic, call them for the most accurate information.

@EmmasCraftsCreation  - How are you filing your Mass. sales tax returns now? Monthly, quarterly, annually?
That determines when the tax dollars you'll collect will be due.

The sales you would have at the fair would be considered "taxable"* & would not be shown in the "exempt"* column like your Etsy sales are.

Note I'm referencing terms* used here in Florida - each State can be different.
Your State should have a website that explains the details.

I file my ST-9s annually but I also never needed to do anything since I never withheld taxes myself.

Do I just put aside all the tax I collected from the year and file/pay when I fill out my ST9 next year?

Thanks!

@EmmasCraftsCreation  - This is the link to Mass.'s website:
https://www.mass.gov/guides/sales-and-use-tax

I'd guess you probably already have this, though.

Anyway, yes if your filing is Annual & there isn't anything in the fine-print so to speak, you won't be paying them until you file next year.
How you decide to personally set aside those $$'s is up to you.

These are questions for your Board of Equlization, or it may be called something else in your state.

I called them today to find my registration confirmation, and they have been wonderful! I think I’ll just give them another call.

Do not rely on information here.  Contact your tax department and get the specifics for handling your situation.

For sure! I just wasn’t even sure where to start, sometimes reading the website can be overwhelming. But heading from others gave me a good starting point of what to look for and ask. Thanks!
