I opted into the Make an Offer option when I was selling vintage items from my parents' estate. I decided to try it on a few art items as well, ones that had been sitting a long time. I recently noticed that it was being applied to my bestsellers, something I would never do. I took them off the program. This morning, the option had been added to two more listings, one of which is a bestseller, and the other which is a new design. Anyone else having this issue?
While some would say it could be a glitch (and it could be), I would not put it past Etsy to do this deliberately in the hopes of more sales, hoping that if you get an offer on your bestsellers, you might sell it anyway.
I would cancel the sale if I noticed. My work is handmade, and I price carefully to make sure I get paid. I'm not marking up extra so I can offer sales. If I didn't notice, it would go through and cheat me.
I don't think it creates a sale. I believe you get a notice that an offer has been made on your item, and you then have the choice to accept it or not.
Etsy's hope is that the offer will find you in a generous mood, or desperate for a sale due to an impending bill that is due, etc. The more items that have the Make An Offer option, the better the chance of finding a seller is such a situation and Etsy getting a sale they might not otherwise.
I have also noticed this. And when you make a new listing, it automatically has the "Make An Offer" opted in. I always opt out when creating the listing. After I have the listing live, I check it in my shop to see and make sure that the "Make An Offer" is not there. I don't want a new listing to be MAO right off the bat! Also periodically I review the list of MAO to make sure that the items selected are the ones that I want selected.
Edit - Grammar
@kickglassenamels Having the MAO only allows a possible buyer to make an offer of a lower amount. They cannot purchase it at a lower amount unless you agree to the lower amount. However you will have to answer them as I believe it is considered a 'message' for Star Seller purposes.
Did not know this. The way it is worded, it sounds like the offer will be accepted up to the percentage that I specified. That's a relief.
Make an Offer messages are not a part of the Star Seller metrics:
If the buyer makes an offer, it will create a message thread with the buyer in your Messages section. These messages are not subject to the Star Seller 24-hour response measurement.
@dayspringcollectible Thank you for clarifying the message part.
