Honestly not sure where to put this but I know I'm not the only one complaining about this. Reddit is going nuts.
Etsy: PEOPLE DO NOT READ ITEM DESCRIPTIONS. Part of the reason for this is that, at least on the app, they don't even NOTICE THEM (the other reason, I realize, is that people just don't read anymore). But it's literally almost invisible on the app.
I recently had a customer ream me via message after receiving her item. She complained about shipping time, printing process, fabric, and "lack of description" of different types of fabric on the listing, accusing me of putting up a misleading listing, etc. (the listing in question is a silk scarf with artwork on it, but i also sell less expensive polyester and modal options - she bought the cheapest one and expected two-sided silk). The *really* unfortunate thing though? She then took her complaints to a college alumni forum where we advertise our businesses.
I do not accept returns since everything is made to order, and all of this information is very clearly spelled out in each item description - extensive information on shipping times (two weeks to arrive), clear descriptions of each fabric type and fiber content, and its printing process (one side or both), etc.
For some of us, the item description includes information that is too lengthy to put in images (or we don't have enough image slots to include it all along with product images). I have an image in each listing, instead, that just basically BEGS people to read the full product description for all this information, and I spell it all out clearly in hopes of avoiding a lot of messages since I don't offer returns on any items made to order.
But guess what? The response is "It doesn't show in the app."
It shows, but you have to look kind of hard. People are already unwilling to read anything, let along look this hard. Can you please make it a little more obvious?
Just like all other apps on phone, some of the information has to be opened up. That is true on Etsy's app. The buyer has to click on Details.
People who are not used to using apps or buying through their phone will have issues with selection.
I just looked and I found the drop downs were there to use but the details with the description is more lengthy and hence harder to read as it requires much more space to read and has to be further opened. My take is to make descriptions short and to the point.
As to the current buyer, she had to select so that is on her but if the quality differs between silk and polyester, I would suggest have listings for silk and listings for polyester. Photos should reflect exactly what the buyer will get and if the two photograph differently then that can possibly be NAD.
You certainly can have photos of all versions and mark them accordingly.
Your items are not custom so they don't fit the not returnable requirement. Made to order is not treated the same as custom. You ship to the EU/UK? You need to have return policies. Can't escape that unless you stop shipping there. If you want to truly make them non-returnable, they would need to be packaged with a note that if opened the item is not returnable.
