Ist es ein Scam?

Jump to solution

Hallo,

The scammers were using Etsy messages but since Etsy has been catching and deleting many of those the scammers have now progressed to direct emails. I guess they get your email address when they make a fake purchase from your shop using a stolen credit card. The sale is later stopped (not sure why it takes so long) and cancelled.

I'm sorry you were caught out. It can happen to anyone, especially if you don't know how the site works. Be sure to contact your bank immediately and ask if there's any chance they can reverse the fraudulent transactions. Then cancel your card completely.

It's a scam, don't ever enter your data. Mark the message as SPAM and never ever click on links leading you off Etsy. Double check if the message is in the FROM ETSY folder, those are the only legitimate Etsy messages, sadly though Etsy FORWARDS messages on Etsy as an email so it can seem real as if the content of the email is from Etsy, yet it isn't.

Etsy will never ask you to verify your account like this. Any order btw will show in your order overview and any money earned from orders will show in tour financial overview, where the order shows the transaction costs and what you received.

Go to your bank asap and block your card and report a scam. Sorry this has happend to you. But possibly you have lost both amounts. I do hope it wasn't too much.

Re: Ist es ein Scam?

Hi, Welcome to Etsy.  I'm sorry you have been hit by scammers. They tend to target new Sellers, often appearing within seconds after someone lists an item/s.  It makes me sick to see this happen to people; I have been seeing an increase of new Sellers coming to the Forum for a while now; being bombarded with Messages from scammers. You don't expect to start fresh on a site, and immediately get hit with this garbage. And as a new Seller, I can see where you could be caught by it; it could happen to anyone.

Many scammers are posing as "Buyers", stating they need your email for an Order. They don't, Etsy already has it. They are trying to get you to input your banking info, so they can steal from you. When you receive a LEGIT Order, it will appear in "Orders" (Left Column of Shop Dashboard); it will also show in your Payment Account. if it isn't there, you have no Order.  Mark the scammer's Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for S Seller).  And never click on links or engage with them.

"Verification" is a popular scam, as well as posing as Etsy Staff/Support, etc.   Scanning of QR Codes is another. When you receive a LEGIT Message from Etsy Support/Staff, etc., it will appear in the "From Etsy" Folder (in Messages). If it isn't there, Mark the Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for S Seller). Messages which pose as Etsy Support (or Staff), should be easy to ferret out; bots should be able to pick up on those, and yet they are still coming through.

Re: Marking a Message as Spam. For the first time, I recently had cause to do this. However, I saw nothing by Messages which said "Mark as Spam". I had no idea where to send the bloody Message. Finally I saw "Report", and clicked it after selecting the Message (and yes, it should say, "Report as Spam" or "Mark as Spam" (or how about "Spam" if character space is an issue).

Here is the Help Article re: Scams.
https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000343128-How-to-Handle-Scams-and-Suspicious-Messages?seg...

Hope this is helpful to you, and may this garbage cease for you and for others. Best Wishes to you.

From your post, I'm understanding that you clicked onto a link and gave the scammers your banking info. Contact your bank and stop your cards immediately. Also, run virus scans on all of your devices, and please contact the authorities; you are the victim of a cybercrime.
Again, I'm very sorry this happened to you.

Thank you everyone. I put the card on ice and have contacted the police. Looking back, the scam should have been obvious and I'm kind of ashamed I fell for it. Thanks so much for lifting my doubts!

Don’t feel ashamed, the scammers are quite sophisticated in their deception and their website duplicates Etsy quite well. Alas many fall for this scam. I am so sorry you fell for it, I do hope you can get your money back. Good luck and I hope you get your first real sale soon.

@Rotfaden  I'm glad you froze the card and contacted the police. However, do not be ashamed in the least. Scammers are everywhere, but here is an infestation of these bozos here. You're new, setting up Shop, trying to learn the ropes, reading the wealth of information. And these idiots bombard a lot of new Sellers. Don't ever feel embarrassed about it.
