Is this Spam?!

Hi, I'm quite new to Etsy, I just posted an item, and very quickly got a message. It said potential new buyer has sent.. but opening it, it is asking me to scan a qr code, the says I need to update my bank details, and shop is suspended until then. I DID go on the QR code, as trying to find  a customer msg, but thankfully did not put in any details, as I'm now thinking it's scam? Am I right? And if so, do I just mark as Span and Etsy happy I've replied? Thank you!

Re: Is this Spam?!

Yes, that's a scam. Mark it as SPAM.

Genuine messages from Etsy will appear in the 'from Etsy' folder of your message inbox. (Check your messages using a browser).

@KardiaGifts
You did not get a message from a "new" buyer. That message was from a scammer.
Why would a buyer ask you to scan a QR code to update your bank info? They wouldn't and neither would Etsy.

Did you not notice this info right below that message and above where you reply?
That info can't be any plainer. DO NOT follow links to other sites.

To stay protected, stay on Etsy. Never follow links to other sites, and don’t share contact, account, or financial info with anyone in Messages.Learn how to spot spam.

If anything ever needs updating on your account you will see a notice on your dashboard or finance page.

Since you clicked on that QR code, it might be best to run a virus/malware scan and change your password.

Re: Is this Spam?!

Etsy also puts the warning up if you click a link that takes you off Etsy:

You're about to leave Etsy

This link is taking you to an external site.

  • Be careful about sharing your credit card and personal info.
  • Etsy won't be able to help if you have a dispute over a transaction on another site.

Re: Is this Spam?!

As yours is a new shop, you are fodder for scammers, so beware. Finish your shop so that it has a professional appearance. This will draw more potential customers, and to some degree, deter possible scammers. Create and upload a banner appropriate to what you're selling, create an About section to share the inspiration behind your creations, and set up your policies and frequently asked questions. Consider revising some of your listing titles to reveal specifically what you're selling. For instance, the "Classy lady, life is short, birthday card" title could be "Life is Short Buy the Shoes Birthday Card". Your tags could then include "Classy Lady Gift", etc. For this listing (and all, in fact), you need to include an image of the back and inside of the card/item. Your description should include the size of the card and whether or not envelopes are included. Best to you with your new shop.

Re: Is this Spam?!

@KardiaGifts  I'm very sorry you were targeted; a cr-ppy experience as a new Seller.  Scammers have been hitting new Sellers as well as seasoned ones.  They also appear right after Sellers list an item/s. Scanning of QR Codes is a popular scam, as well as "Verification" and threats of Shop closure. Many of these goons pose as Etsy Staff/Support, etc.   When you receive a LEGIT Message from Etsy Support/Staff, etc., it will appear in the "From Etsy" Folder (in Messages). If it isn't there, Mark the Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for S Seller).  *"From Etsy" Folder was not on the App until recently (a highlighted blurb on the Message). The thing is, should you not see this first (and be familiar with it), you could receive a scammer's Message beforehand. Also, the App does not allow you to Mark the Message as Spam (you must use a browser instead, or use the Buyer App).

Also for future, many scammers are posing as "Buyers", stating they need your email for an Order. They don't, Etsy already has it. When you receive a LEGIT Order, it will appear in "Orders & Shipping" (Left Column of Shop Dashboard); if it isn't there, you have no Order.  Mark the scammer's Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for S Seller).  And never click on links or engage with them.

Etsy should be able to nail these FAKE accounts who are impersonating Etsy Staff/Support, etc. It's happening way too often. For a while now, Sellers have been reporting that legitimate Buyer Messages are being put in "Spam" by Etsy (obviously a glitch to combat the scamming problem). Here is the Help Article re: Scams.
https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000343128-How-to-Handle-Scams-and-Suspicious-Messages?seg...

Because you clicked the QR Code, you should run virus scans on all of your devices.

Hope this is helpful to you, and may this garbage cease for you and for others.
