I had a look at my listings this morning and was suprised to see 16 items in baskets that were not there yesterday.
i view stats for the items every day.
I looked at Etsy stats for these items and some show no visits today or the last few days ...
one shows no visits since the 26 th of last month.
I may be wrong , but i was under the impression that for an item to be placed in the basket someone
would have to visit the page , view the item and place it in the basket ? yet a lot of the items show no visits on the stats page .
any ideas ?

Etsy's stats have always been unreliable. They usually show lots of views and visits and then etsy filters out the bot views. They are as reliable at this as they are on any other information they present as gospel truth. They may be removing some bot views, all the bot views or a mix of bot views and real views. If you want accuracy, use google stats.
I agree with @howtobooksandmore those stats are not reliable at all.
However there is also a feature for some people (some kind of test, I had it last week) where you can put items directly in your cart from the search page. This may account for the discrepancy also.
@NativityKnits: As mentioned, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence in this forum that Etsy stats are unreliable and that your should use Google analytics instead. As for the "number of carts" number it is intended to create a sense of urgency with buyers not for use by sellers. We can find no reference from Etsy that the "number of carts" number is even consistent in the sense that all listings will show that number.
