I'm using the browser, not the app. When I click to edit my shops photo and banner it directs me to use a computer instead. The problem is that I only have an ancient laptop that barely works... Why is this a thing? Is there any way around this? I need to be able to edit from my phone.

Practically no apps have the full functionality of a website....even more so with the Etsy app. Perhaps use a desktop computer in a library or other public device. This is unlikely to change anytime soon.
She said she wasn’t using the app.
Try switching to the desktop version of the browser on your phone. I just checked, because I was sure I'd done this before, and was able to edit.
I just figured this out! Go to the Etsy site in your phone’s browser then next to the browser address click on “Aa”. This should give you the option to request desktop site. Initially it won’t look any different but if you now try and edit you will have all the usual editing options available.
Thank you!!! This has saved me so much frustration. I’m selling on the side, not running a full time business, and can’t justify buying a computer/laptop just to occasionally change my Etsy shop’s description.
I dont understand the " Aa" part.im on Android.so i type in etsy.com? Then somewhere an Aa shows up?
I don't understand why people try to run a business from an app. An app is usually intended to generate business in the form of sales. They rarely have all the functionality of a browser or desk top. If it works well for sales and generates a lot of them, the app owner is unlikely to alter it except to increase sales further. This is why Etsy doesn't respond to requests to add features to the app and probably never will.
Not only what you have said, Etsy also admits they have issues with their app, especially for Android. They make one change and it messes everything else up.
They're not trying to use the app.

I can edit my listings from my phone, but I don't. All my listings, editing, picture uploading, etc. are done on my desktop with a giant monitor for a bird's eye view or my laptop with a mouse. Trying to edit on my phone using my fingers with tiny everything just doesn't work for me. Do people really run their online business' from their phone only? I am uncomfortable just thinking about it.
For me using a phone would be a last ditch effort. As others mentioned my fingers would be hitting three keys at once, I'd be swiping in the wrong direction, all that stuff.
Are you connecting up your phone to your home modem/wifi? If not and you're relying on your cell phone provider, between possible data limitations and other things, I'd imagine that could cause issues.
The OP said they are using a browser.
But, no. Banner function isn’t supported on mobile… neither through cellular data or wifi. You can change your avatar or shop photo though.
Try your local library - ours has free access to computers. Before I could afford a laptop I ran my small business from the library!
If you do edit from your phone, make sure all browsing windows from other apps and sites are closed. Be especially careful if you are banking online.
I agree and the thing is I have never gone on my actual computer to set up or edit my Etsy shop but I have a banner up currently so at one point I had access from my phone/mobile app to add and edit that feature.
