Holiday Shipping?

Jump to solution

Yesterday was a holiday here in the US. No carriers were shipping on Monday the 5th of September, but somehow I was expected to ship on this day. Now I have several orders that are marked as shipped late. Is there something we can do to resolve this error?

Re: Holiday Shipping?

Can people please stop gaslighting us into thinking that it is OK for Etsy to consider a federal holiday in the seller's location as a business day?

No one else does this, it's a relatively easy fix for Etsy, and all I see here are longtime Etsy sellers trying to explain that it's an acceptable policy because sellers have a BS manual workaround they can apply if they catch the order in time (on a holiday).

This is not OK, stop pretending it is. Etsy needs to start incorporating local holidays in their definition of business day. No court would accept their explanation/definition of what they consider a "business day". The "worldwide business" excuse is a canard - if they have regulatory approval to operate in a market, it shouldn't be hard to incorporate that market's holiday calendar (again, everyone else does it).

@EvergreenPod   It is not an easy fix.  Exactly what holidays do you want and what people would you like to offend by not having their holiday chosen?   Etsy is a global community unlike Amazon and eBay that have divided up the world.

Retail business does not recognize holidays.  Most businesses are opening and functioning on holidays.   Only exceptions are Easter and Christmas for the US.

Business days recognition is the only way Etsy has worked for 15+ years,

Since Etsy does not count holidays, anywhere in the world. They give you the ability ahead of time to mark your packages to ship later so this doesn't happen. It has been this way since Etsy started, it is not an error. I keep a calendar handy to make sure I know which holidays fall on a Monday. Some places do Columubus/Indigenous peoples day in Oct. and then Vetrans Day in Nov. So be prepared next time.

I also discovered this several postal holidays ago.  Etsy does not adjust the ship date (they say they have international sellers, so it can't adjust for US only holidays).  However, the ship date can be adjusted by seller, which will keep your good shipping record.  It has to be done order by order, but it is pretty easy. Go to your orders and click the 3-dot icon at the right of order; there is an option for "Update ship by date" .  I add a personal note instead of the etsy blurb.  It's a handy option if you ever are late shipping due to other reasons. I hope this helps.

From what I can see, this is no longer an option. I tried to update the ship date this weekend without success.

This seems to be an issue every holiday. Same thing today, January 3. Some of my orders are showing late but yesterday was a postal holiday, I couldn't ship. When is Etsy going to correct this?

@TreadleLady   They have never done so in 15+ years.  Sellers have always had to account for holidays by extending shipping dates or making other arrangements.  You have been on Etsy long enough to know this as it has happened before.

Etsy is a global site so they recognize business days and weekends only.  Never holidays.

An easy workaround is to use 1 to three days rather than one day shipping.

Change your ship times to 3-5 days. It will cover any long weekend.  You can still ship same day or next day. It gives a bit of shipping cushion if something gets hung up somewhere  also. You can state in your listing you typically ship in one day excluding weekends. Most people that want it to arrive in a couple days are a problem anyways. Last minute shoppers are not my target customers. Then the shipper hangs you out to dry and Etsy refunds for it not arriving "on time".

Re: Holiday Shipping?

The solution on the Etsy side is remarkably simple: determine business days based on whether the post office is open in the seller's country. Esty's global status and the buyer's location have nothing to do with it, and no one needs to think about whether they are offending people by choosing certain holidays since they are just following what is physically possible (can't ship if the post office is closed). I have yet to hear a good reason for Etsy to do it the way they do, just a lot of "they've been doing it this way forever noob".

Like everyone else I adjusted my ship times to account for this issue so now my ship times are accurate for holidays, and longer than they need to be for every single non holiday order. Not great, but at least I won't get punished for Etsy's laziness or inability to implement simple solutions.
