I used to have a shop called Kusari Cuffs here on Etsy. I shut it down probably 10 years ago??
This morning in my PayPal account I have money for an item I don't sell and have never sold. (I copied and pasted the item title into Google and it pulled up my old Etsy shop populated with manufactured, not handmade items.) The buyer, I am assuming, has opened a dispute on PayPal for an unauthorized transaction. I can't make heads or tails of what the scam is here, but I'm really concerned.
What do I do?
get in touch with Paypal immediately because at least they have customer service.
then get a phone call back from Etsy, in the "help" section
can you get into the shop as a seller? Change the password. Contact Etsy through the help center
I don't. I deleted the email I used for that account.
Wow. It's definitely open. Just taking Paypal which shouldn't be possible for a US based shop.
Right?
It's probably because that's what they had when they were active, before Etsy payments were required. Some glitch where old accounts can at least temporarily bypass that requirement.
This is exactly why they're starting to shut down accounts that haven't been logged into for years, they're targets for scammers.
@DarcyHornBeadWork: It sounds like the store may have been hacked. You need to log into it and change any passwords, financial information, etc, put the shop in vacation mode, and then contact Etsy. You should also try to enable two factor authentication if it is not in place. Any bad activity here will end up impacting all of your shops.
I don't have access to the email I used for this shop ten years ago.
@DarcyHornBeadWork: So you are also unable to log in?
I don't know the email or password...I shut that shop down, I think maybe 10 years ago.
You shouldn't need the email to log into that shop if you know the password, should you? It's been so long since I've logged in, I don't remember.
You should be able to log in using the username on the email address line. Of course, that would require knowing the password, which the OP doesn't.
I'm freaking out.
Contact PayPal
I'm on the phone with them right now. They are recommending I contact the buyer.
They aren't seeing any other suspicious activity.
i reported the shop as being hacked.
and you need to contact support.

I don’t have access to my old email address
Thanks. Unfortunately, they are asking for a string of information I don't have. I had a chat with someone last night and they escalated the ticket to some other department. Hopefully I can get this shop closed and deleted soon.
Well, these "hackers" are not very bright as they are selling items and paying you:(
Pay Pal is not seeing "suspicious" activity because there is a transaction and the Pay Pal Account received the funds.
This is most unusual but, given the circumstances and the fact that you have no access to your Shop, can you close or pause your Pay Pal account to prevent further Sales?
But you also need to follow up with Etsy because, if the "hacked" shop is closed, that may negatively impact your current Shop
Chat is open here https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?segment=selling#issue_sell_desposits_fees-contact_select
That's the confounding part...I don't get the scam.
You might also change your PayPal password. The scammers might be hoping to take over your PayPal as well.
