Handmade Items Not Shown in Filters

I have been noticing that the handmade items on Etsy are being drowned out by retail manufactures.  It is hardly fair for those who have mass production abilities to be selling on a web site that is supposedly a company that was initially selling mostly handmade items.  We can not compete with these large companies!  Etsy was once the place to go for handmade items!  Now, it is almost impossible to find handmade items.  They have taken "Handmade" out of the filters!  That is hurting us little shop owners!  I am about ready to call it quits and move on to another source to sell my jewelry items.  There is entirely too much competition  here on Etsy to have a chance to make a profit.

It makes me sad because I really did like Etsy when they were fair with us small businesses!

Re: Handmade Items Not Shown in Filters

I am with you on this! I didn't know there ever was a "handmade" option on the filters. Maybe I missed that when it was there. There definitely needs to be a better way to distinguish between truly handmade and mass produced or AI generated items. I'm in the art field and I'm getting drowned out by sellers who list clearly AI generated art as "handmade".  I was hoping the new rules to distinguish "made by" or "designed by" would help, but it doesn't seem it has.

@EliseEnghWatercolors There is supposed to be more to come in helping handmade sellers (as well as others) and buyers distinguish what they are looking for.  I think it's this fall. The video that Josh made about the listing details was only the beginning.  I suspect that there will be a breakdown in categories.

Re: Handmade Items Not Shown in Filters

With the introduction of the new Creativity Standards, you won't need the word "handmade" as a filter. Etsy will likely add the new categories - made by, handpicked by etc. - to search and other areas of the site soon. Since some of them are currently inaccurate, I expect they are working on fixing them and then testing.

I got a link to this page: https://www.etsy.com/featured/hub/fashion-favorites through a recent email. You will notice "handmade, handpicked, or designed by" are the categories mentioned; sourced by is excluded.

I'm glad that you have a positive attitude on the subject.  But, I disagree. But, I will do more research.  Thank you for your response.

@MyStylCraft You disagree with what? I am just presenting what Etsy told us.

What used to be found in "Handmade" has been broken into "made by" and "designed by". They are still tinkering with the application of those labels though, and will test what ways work best to display them. They surveyed some sellers last week on the problems with the automated application of the labels; that will likely take some time to digest and make corrections for.

Definitely do some research - these are all basic facts that are out there!

Re: Handmade Items Not Shown in Filters

Thank you, MyStylCraft, for posting this. Your work is outstanding! (I tried to post on this a month ago but glitchy forums wouldn't let me.) I, too, strongly disagree which the deletion of the Handmade filter in Search. Lumping together "handmade, handpicked, or designed by" creates only more confusion for customers who are genuinely seeking authentic, quality handmade goods. Handpicked is Vintage and the "designed by" is a huge loophole being used by legions of resellers of the very same wholesale catalog, factory mass produced junk. Basically, they lie through their teeth saying that they are the designer - it's baloney and has ruined many an authentic Etsy Handmade sellers trade here. Since the new Creativity Standards were implemented, my shop views are next to nothing. In fairness, I've been working to build stock for large art markets where I've had the very best show in my many, many decades of doing nationally juried events. Etsy is chaos by design and has been for at least the past 7 years, alas. Been here since 2007 so I remember the good days. Have gone back to doing in-person events and that market has been very strong despite inflation and other concerns. Patrons of the arts want to and continue to support artists.

Re: Handmade Items Not Shown in Filters

Thank you for your support Bread and Roses !  I have not had any sales since February of this year!  So, I guess you can see why I am frustrated.  But, I feel a little better now knowing that I am not the only shop owner that feels this way.

I don't understand why Etsy didn't let you post your concerns about this subject.  You did a much better job of explaining the situation than I did.

Since you haven't had a sale since February, I suggest asking for a critique.

You have a listing titled "Love Those Diamonds" for a bracelet.

I'm sorry cindylouwho2!  I didn't mean to offend you. I meant I didn't agree with Etsy's methods.

Re: Handmade Items Not Shown in Filters

@MyStylCraft no offense taken!
: - )  I am just trying to understand.

Years ago, CEO Josh Silverman said handmade was not Etsy's value proposition. The time to be worried about Handmade being downplayed was then; no reduction of the word's use should surprise us now. I am actually surprised they used it on that fashion page I linked to.

They also recently said that buyers are confused by what is actually allowed on Etsy. They drew up the Creativity Standards to make that clearer to everyone (while sneaking in a few extra exceptions but also limiting a few things that were previously allowed, such as "commercial charm on a commercial chain" and AI prompts). They were not wrong that buyers are confused; I've seen plenty of sellers who did not understand the old rules. I am not really sure the new categories will work better, but we will have to see how they use them to know for sure.

We are wanting the old days of Etsy back when handmade, vintage and craft supplies is what it was all about.

I sure hope they don't do away with the Vintage filter because Handpicked by includes Gift baskets. Yikes.

Re: Handmade Items Not Shown in Filters

I agree.  There used to be a handmade filter you could check to narrow your search.
The other day I was looking for a handmade ceramic animal figurine and it was gone.  This made my search very frustrating because I had to weed through all sorts of vintage figurines, which I didn’t want.

Re: Handmade Items Not Shown in Filters

I see you are a jewelry seller as am I.  There are entire Etsy shops dedicated to reselling trademarked jewelry lines.  Often with price tags and packaging.  How do we compete against that?  Since the new creativity standards have come out, I've notice these listings are now designated as "designed by".  How in the world can Etsy not catch this?  As I understand it you are not allowed to use a trademarked name anywhere in your shop, and yet this niche seems to have fallen through the cracks.  I know this is my pet peeve, but I feel your pain.

@JanesAddiction: "... you are not allowed to use a trademarked name anywhere in your shop ..." Not strictly true - a shop could get a license to use other people's intellectual property in their creations, and then there is the 'Widget for TrademarkedProduct™' exception that a shop may get away with legally.

Re: Handmade Items Not Shown in Filters

I took a look at your shop.

Beautiful work. Original. Unique.

I suspect that your titles are contributing to your problems. They're original too, but not what shoppers are likely to be typing into searches.

I hope you spend some time on your titles and tags SEO before you give up. Anywhere you sell online will use SEO for items to get found.

And I suspect that the new 'made by' will help handmade sellers once it is more fully implemented by Etsy.

Re: Handmade Items Not Shown in Filters

This is sad. I, too, have felt the impact of technology vs the actual human connection now employed by Etsy.

Authentic, Hand Made and antique/vintage items are not replaceable. These are the items that Etsy originally sold..human connection, pride and creativity. I think, in order to survive, Etsy should revisit its' roots; regain the human connection that made it a great venue/marketplace!

I hope this post falls within the "Community Policy".
