HELP! Playboy bag listings not showing in search

I have two vintage playboy bags listed and they are not showing up in search. At all!

They have been listed for a fair while so its not because they are new, it is also seemingly not banned content as they are just bags , they are on my profile so not deactivated and there are loads of other playboy listings in search.

I also have tried re listing them and this doesnt woerk either and has been a waste of money.  Everything else ive listed shows up on search. I have had my shop since 2019 and have over 500 sales.

I am at a loss as to why this is happening and have not heard back from Etsy customer service - These bags are rare and fairly expensive and id really like to sell them, but its not going to happen if they are not showing in search!    Any advice appriciated!

Re: HELP! Playboy bag listings not showing in search

Looks like the word 'playboy' might be shadow-banned. I dunno, it's just a guess. Other words have been shadow-banned (e.g. Listing looks okay but doesn't show up in search results).

  • I put the entire listing title into your shop search and one listing showed up.
  • I put 'playboy pinup' in the search box and 2 listings showed up.
  • I put just 'playboy' in the shop search box and no listings showed up.

Re: HELP! Playboy bag listings not showing in search

I had to remove pinup from listings in the last to fix them

Re: HELP! Playboy bag listings not showing in search

Another  shadow banned word is "sexy" along with "panties". IF either of these are in your titla , tags or description they will not show up. I think "pinup" is also shadowbanned but not sure on that one.

Best of luck figuring this one out! Pretty soon there will,be no words left that we can use.

Re: HELP! Playboy bag listings not showing in search

The OP does have one listing with the word "sexy" in their shop.

@LittleMsMod

unless you want your item ONLY searchable by that word, remove it.

That, and every "sexy" search is now populated with soft core porn videos that auto-play when you accidentally put your cursor over top of them...

Yes, like Amaradorn said, Etsy shadow bans listings with certain words.

And from what I've read here, the Etsy people (or bots, whatever) who answer chat requests do not know this.

Here's an informative thread discussing the issue

Re: HELP! Playboy bag listings not showing in search

They won't show if i search etsy for playboy or playboy pvc handbag.

They will show if I search playboy pinup pvc handbag.

same with your shop search. I have to use pinup to see them.

To me, looks like Pinup is the shadow ban word. (Like sexy, you have to have that word in the search term if it's in the title/tags. if you have sexy in the title/tags and don't use it in search, it won't show anything with sexy in the title/tags.)

Try taking out pinup from the titles/tags

@CappuccinoLace

I think you are 100% correct. I went thru the same thing with my dog diapers and calling them "panties".

The OP is probably going to have to remove the word pinup and pin up from everything she wants to show in search!

@CappuccinoLace

That makes sense from my test results and luckily that's probably easier to remove than 'playboy'.

Re: HELP! Playboy bag listings not showing in search

Thanks everyone - incredibly it was the word pinup.. what I dont understand is that before i changed my listings and searched pinup my bags would come up along with over 7000 other listings and also pinup and rockabilly is a drop down option in the style of clothing box, so this makes no sense what so ever... well at least my bags are now showing in playboy search of not pin up.

Re: HELP! Playboy bag listings not showing in search

Etsy removed Playboy from Etsy long time ago.  You might want to consider listing the bags someplace else.

Re: HELP! Playboy bag listings not showing in search

Etsy has created a XXX search results system.

As far as I can tell, if the listing's title contains words from their XXX list then the listing only shows up in search queries that include a word from their XXX list (not necessarily the same XXX word as is in the listing's title). So the listing is banned from all non-XXX searches.

My testing has so far shown that putting the XXX words in the tags does not limit the listing to the XXX only searches.

Our shop has a couple of listings with XXX words, and with a bit of guesswork and experimenting it was possible to isolate the problem words and swap them from title to tags to re-enable listing visibility in normal non-XXX searches.
