I've been on the hunt for cheaper shipping options since my products are so small. When I learned of the first class option I was so excited and started to offer free shipping. I just had the worst week in the history of my business due to this. I've had horrible reviews calling me a scam, had to issue refunds just to appease customers who think it's unfair to have to go through purchase protection process, and shipping replacement packages meaning more shipping cost. Am i the only one that's having this issue with tracking numbers issued that don't track and upset customers?
[EDITED TO ADD: Ooo, it looks like there are a few other threads in the forums about USPS being really delayed/backed up due to the holidays. So perhaps that is the cause of what's going on with your packages]
I’m sorry this has been your experience!
I’ve used first class (now ground advantage) shipping for years, for both of my shops and it’s been basically fine. My items are also small, either jewelry or jewelry supplies, so similar in size to what you offer. Yes, there has been the occasional package that has gone missing, and there are also times where tracking does not get updated, or the package takes a crazy weird detour to get to the destination.
But I’ve not had an issue where tracking numbers themselves are incorrect. I assume you’ve been purchasing through Etsy labels and making sure weight/dimensions are correct??
Also, on a side note - your shop banner and announcement indicate you are doing a sweepstakes, and I’m not sure that is allowed on Etsy. Regardless if it is or not, I’d recommend making sure you are following all laws in your state regarding sweepstakes. (For instance, most states prohibit giveaways/sweepstakes that require a purchase in order to win - you need to offer another way to enter that does not require a purchase.) Is your state government or the FTC going to come after you? Probably not. But since you’re posting here in the forums and directing people to your shop, it sets you up for scrutiny, so I figured I’d mention it.
I don't have any issue with ground service. They arrive on time with my processing times set as they are. Yes, I purchase them through Etsy which is why I thought this would be a productive way to get some advice. However, I think perhaps I've come to the wrong place for constructive responses. I was looking for advice from a peer that might have experienced the same with using the First Class Mail Flat packages. I appreciate your taking the initiative to critique my page. I wish I had time like that to spare. Your "side note" that's wildly unprofessional and unnecessary, not to mention condescending... don't you think? No, Probably not.
Ma'am, I stated very clearly that I just had the most overwhelming week I've ever had since starting my business just last year. Again, I think it's great you have time for offering unsolicited advice, but how unprofessional and insensitive to decide to put that form of side note on a public forum. I've clearly come to the wrong place for advice that is conducive to my success, not point out completely off topic things you've taken it upon yourself to grade my shop on. I'll wipe my tears though and take down my raffle I started in the intentions to offer a nice gift to my customers that support my business. I wasn't trying to get views of my shop, I was trying to get help, advice, perhaps CONSTRUCTIVE criticism but not to open a forum for bullys. Fortunately, I don't give much weight to others that lack tact or couth. I hope you have the very best holidays though. Keep up the good work!
@Learise You say "First Class," but do you mean USPS Ground Advantage?
Or do you mean the First Class letter shipping labels that don't track for buyers & sellers but do track enough to make Etsy happy?
Ground Advantage has tracking. If you're not buying your shipping labels on Etsy, you need to be sure the tracking number gets entered on the Etsy order.
If you are refunding and shipping replacements, do one or the other but not both.
Sounds like you are using FC letter or FC flats. Those don't have actual USPS tracking but Pitney Bowes "tracking" which is more of an estimator. You are better off with Ground Advantage package ( enable FC and Parcel if using calculated shipping/profiles) . Add a rectangle of corrugated cardboard to make it rigid or padding to make it over 3/4" thick if in an envelope. A light envelope is around $4 GA and tops out around $6 at 15oz.
Some of your listings are so low priced you are losing money with a sale? 50 cents?
@hopeandjoystudios I saw that ...
@Learise You're paying more fees for some of your listings than you're selling them for. The listing fee is $.20. Selling fees are 6.5% on item + shipping. Payment processing is $.25 + 3% of the total amount processed. You have several listings that you're selling for less than what it costs you to list & sell them. Just wanted to be sure you're aware of this. And this isn't even counting the wholesale price of the actual beads.
If you're trying to ship beads as a first class flat then you will run into issues. They need to be uniform thickness. Flat has size requirements including 1/4-3/4" thickness. Beads could cause the envelope to rip open when going through sort machines.
If you had flat packages then shipping through etsy does provide a measure of tracking. But USPS is having a lot of issues this year being late and things not getting scanned. Even database issues as I give a scan sheet that the workers scans each time. Yet some packages will update online and others won't. Edited to add flats through etsy have tracking, but are likely getting even less updates due to them being busy. If people are skipping tracking updates on packages then flats even more so.
Ive been using USPS Ground Advantage for years, never had any issues.
But my vintage store has all sizes of items, and only about a third of my buyers choose Priority.
Best of luck.
