The sale launched at midnight last night - I realized after getting a few orders for items I never put on sale - with discounts. I looked in Sales & Promotions and the sale had been launched at midnight.
I ended the sale, but how did this happen?
You had to agree to participate in the sale. Are you sure you did not set it up? That's the usual way. I can't think Etsy would spend the time to set up sales in individual shops without seller knowledge.
But you may take this opportunity to check to see if anything else has been changed just to be sure someone has not gotten into your shop. Probably not but it wouldn't hurt to look around and make sure everything else is okay.
Funny enough I got the promo to sign up for Father's Day but not Mother's Day. I did my own sale.
Are you saying that Etsy signed you up for the sale without you initiating it?
There was a banner to click a while back to join the sale, maybe you clicked it?
Did you get more sales after you ended it?
Etsy did not include in the sale. You enrolled yourself
I received promo emails today to shop the "now live 30% off Fathers Day sale", so when you signed up to it, you agreed that the sale would start today to be part of the promotion.
I don't think so. Etsy hasn't gone THAT far yet!
correction:
Etsy hasn't gone THAT far again!
Yes they have signed up sellers to features when the sellers looked at the information page.
That's what happened with the launch of Etsy Plus. Clicking on the banner button to go to the info page silently signed you up to the free 1 month trial, with $10 a month being charged after the trial.
They have also been known to set listing attributes, especially gemstones.
They are sneaky, do not trust them.

Sadly I agree with @FancyTogs.
Back in March, Etsy changed some shops business days - Etsy decided to include Saturday &/or Sunday - based on a shop's history.
Some shops said they received an email from Etsy that their shop had been included in this change. But some shops don't receive any emails from Etsy, so...
Others received a notice on their dashboards but the option to click on the "no thank you" button didn't necessarily work.
While one would like to think that an automatic inclusion in a sale couldn't happen, with all the recent changes & numerous glitches being reported, I say "never say never".
I have a banner on my dashboard that says "Don't miss out on traffic from sales events", I bet if I clicked on that I would be signing myself up to be opted in to all sales events. Maybe that's what happened to you?
The sign-up started weeks ago. You had to enroll to be a part of it.
I received no banner notification for the sale
There have been several other posts where people have mentioned being in the sale and not having signed up for it. I agree with everyone that one needs to sign up for the sales, but some of the sign ups aren't all that obvious.
Agreed - with Etsy's poor wording, it is just as possible that one can "opt in" without realizing it just by clicking on something.
I doubt many men are looking for my type of jewelry but I did have to set it up. Maybe you did by accident?
Same happened to me and I wasn't even on a computer when the "end user" set it up. It's a hack! And Etsy said I did it. Clearly that is not eh case.
Happened to me too and no resolution from Etsy support.
