Exchange rate problem with listing prices

I just opened a new Etsy shop. I am located in the EU and I only sell to the US and my shop currency is set in euros. When I check the price in dollars, the price is TOTALLY off from the exchange rate (like not even close!). My shirt costs 32 euros but in US dollars it is 43.56. This makes no sense! Anyone have the same happen to them?

Your listing is $34.71 in USD. The exchange rate is dynamic not static.

Re: Exchange rate problem with listing prices

Hi, Yes, I completely understand that. And $34.71 would be completely reasonable considering the current rate, but for some reason Etsy shows the price as $43.56.

Re: Exchange rate problem with listing prices

The exchange rate appears to be correct.  Etsy adds a fee for currency conversion and that is added to the purchaser's price.  Also per Etsy rules, you must sell to the country where you are located.

Re: Exchange rate problem with listing prices

Hi, well, I'm not selling domestically at all, not even in the EU. I don't think it says anywhere in Etsy that you must sell to your own country. The currency conversion fee of 2.5% applies if my shop currency differs from my bank account currency, which they don't. It's just that the amount stated on Etsy's US pages seems way off the current euro to dollar rate.

Re: Exchange rate problem with listing prices

Assuming your POD items are shipping from the USA, Etsy has to add VAT to the price for sales to the EU & UK -- so the $ price you are seeing will be the conversion from euros plus a conversion fee plus VAT

Re: Exchange rate problem with listing prices

Hi, the thing is I'm not selling anywhere but the US. And yes, the printer is located in the US. I'm adding the prices in my listings in euros (since that is my shop currency) but checking my shop through Etsy's US pages gives very different rates than an actual exchange rate conversion of the prices does. It's a bit complicated the way it's all set up in Etsy, but it shouldn't be rocket science

Re: Exchange rate problem with listing prices

@SilmuJewellery You are seeing the price with VAT added to it because Etsy's system can tell that you live in the EU.

Any EU buyer will see this price if they go to your shop to look at your listings even if you don't sell to the EU.

I'm in Canada (and you don't ship to Canada) what I see is $34.71, that is what US buyers will see too.

@TheTeeCornerCo: "When I check the price in dollars ..." Are you also changing the delivery location or just the currency? Both affect the displayed price.

Hi, yes, I'm doing both. I'm suspecting a glitch in the system?

Yes, this is a common issue! Etsy doesn’t just convert currency based on the exchange rate—they also add a conversion fee, and sometimes, their system rounds prices in a way that makes them seem off. Additionally, if you’ve enabled 'automatic pricing adjustments,' Etsy may be factoring in things like VAT or other fees.

You might want to check your pricing settings under ‘Finances’ > ‘Payment settings’ to see if any automatic adjustments are enabled. If the numbers still seem wrong, contacting Etsy support might be the best way to get clarification!

Re: Exchange rate problem with listing prices

Hi, thanks so much for your reply and advice. I'll check that setting. I was under the impression that currency conversion charges kick in only for the seller and only when the shop currency differs from bank account currency. A US shopper should be able to see prices in dollars without any extras.

Re: Exchange rate problem with listing prices

@SilmuJewellery

There is a fee applied for converting from your listing currency to the buyer's currency. From the help pages for BUYERS:

How does my currency affect the price I see on Etsy?

When buying from a seller who lists in a currency other than your preferred currency, Etsy converts the listing price for you using an approximate conversion based on current exchange rate data. When a currency conversion is required, Etsy applies an additional currency conversion charge. Calculation rates are updated regularly.

Re: Exchange rate problem with listing prices

I'm in the EU, I see the price as 41.31 USD when my shipping location is for France.

This is because Etsy is adding VAT + currency conversion fee (yes VAT even though you do not ship to my location and I cannot purchase)

When I switch the shipping to US however, the price corrects to 34.71 USD but ONLY after I place the item in my shopping cart.
