Etsy scam messages

Jump to solution

I I got many messages from ETSY SCAMMERS ( I didn't know that time)  that your shop has been suspended , you have to re-verify the bank account and I saved myself from being scammed. So basically what happened is that I got message from them saying that you have received an order but you have to do your bank verification if you want money, so I entered the details , email, I give them my cvv also( so dumb) I felt that this is really official Esty message , and I'm also new on this platform.  so i had no idea. Then when I checked in the help center, I came to know that such scams are happening. so I immediately froze my bank account and put all the messages into scams. I got such messages again and again . I'm scared now that my account is safe or not, I changed my password but still. what should do now?

I think you are safe, going forward, for any future scam messages, now that you are aware.

There is a section in messages * called "From Etsy" that is the only place legitimate messages from Etsy will appear - any others should be spammed and not responded to.

* Unfortunately at this time, that From Etsy section is not showing on the Seller app - but I just checked, and it does show on the mobile browser / desktop site.

Scammers can't scam you without your help.  As long as you aren't clicking on links, accepting Cashier's Checks, or giving out your email, you will be fine.  Keep everything on Etsy, and only access Etsy from your shop dashboard.

I'm going to post three threads that all sellers should read:

Good luck.

@Devistorebyme   I don't believe just freezing your account is going to work.  Once you thaw it out (unfreeze it), the scammers still have access to your account.  Report this to your bank and they will close your account and your cards.

Please protect yourself by checking with your bank (all have 24 hour phone service) and making sure you are okay.

You've received good advice already, but I will add that you really need to switch on 2 factor authentication for your Etsy account. Scammers have been known to hijack shops, as well as stealing money.

@UppNorthEh and it's because they (scammer) turned it on after the fact. I still think it's a good idea, regardless.

I'm new here, Jan 25, and have been scammed for money. I'm so careful with online scammers, but genuinely thought this was Etsy sending messages. I've reported it to my bank, that bank card cancelled. I'm just wondering how the scammers got to know about which bank I was with, the account number etc. Feeling slightly dubious whether to stay on Etsy

Etsy has nothing to do with the scammers, all they are is the place the scammers found you. This is happening at many on line selling platforms.
Did they actually give you your banking information in the first message? If they did then why would they want you to verify it? They have what they want.
Did you go off Etsy to send the information?  Big red flag, why would Etsy message an Etsy seller to talk about Etsy business somewhere besides on Etsy?
Did you look to see if you had an order before sending the information?  If there is no orders showing, or your shop isn’t showing as on vacation, then you know the message is not correct.
Did you see the warning about scammers that Etsy has put up  at numerous places? There should have been a warning with the message, before you replied.
My kids made sure I knew that with a message coming from Etsy, Walmart, Verizon, Amazon and places like these then you go to that site to answer them. Never respond to the message, text, or email itself.

Hello @Stewbees,

We're sorry to hear about your experience. Please know that Etsy is actively engaged in preventing scammers from targeting our community members. If you receive a suspicious message, please proceed with caution. Etsy Support will never ask you to provide personal information via Etsy Messages, such as your email address or password. Any legitimate message from us will show in your "From Etsy" folder.

If you receive a suspicious message, here’s how to report it:

  1. Sign in to Etsy.com and go to Your Account.
  2. Go to Messages
  3. Select the suspicious message from your inbox.
  4. Choose Mark as Spam.

You’ll find examples of common scammer techniques and phishing messages here in our Help Center. Read our Account Security Checklist in the Seller Handbook for more steps you can take to protect your account.
