Etsy charged me $1.85/click today??!!!

Jump to solution

I’ve used etsy ads for a while, and I’m used to seeing $.10 to $.50 per click.  however, one of my products got 3 clicks, and the cost was over $5.50.  INSANE.  Anyone seen anything like this before?!!

A few things play into the cost of the lick. From the help center:

Each interaction may not cost the same amount. The quality of the listing (great photos, titles, tags) and the amount of competition may affect the cost per click with an ad. If quality of a listing is low, cost per click may be higher. If competition for that ad space is high, cost per click will be higher.

So either your listing has a low quality score or the keyword(s) getting clicked on is in a high competition space. A lot of shops are using ads and the same keywords, so you need to assess if the keywords are worth it. For me, the higher cost per click always leads to a sale, so it's worth it for me. Also take a look at the product that is costing more and see if the listing could use some improvement.

You are competing with all the other sellers of that item. So if there are a lot of people running ads, this is going to drive the cost up. I have never found running ads to be profitable since Etsy removed the seller's ability to cap what they are willing to spend per click. As for quality score (very important), Etsy says:

"Listing Quality Score: to determine a listing's quality score, we factor in a combination of data such as clicks, views, favorites, and purchases to determine how well the listing will convert into a purchase or may be relevant to shoppers."

Make sure that all of your keywords are relevant and that your titles are written for a human and not for a computer. The more specific they are to the spreadsheet you are selling, the more likely a click will result in a sale. If you are using keywords that don't really fit your product, you increase the possibility that you will get a lot of clicks but no sales. Good Luck!

They had a feature to cap CPC??? It is ridiculous that they removed that. It should be an opt in/out feature.

I’ve read before that sellers were mad etsy removed the ability to cap the click cost… just never understood why.  Now I get it, and I’m not happy about it either!  lol

@SpreadWiseCo I really liked "pay per click" they used to have.

Not sure this comment is being placed here. It was meant to be below another.

I decided to give ads a try recently because my shop has been slow. I ran them for about a month. I got just over $25 in orders and spent just over $14 in ads. It definitely wasn’t worth spending $14 to make less than $10 (after accounting for Etsy fees). It reminded me why I stopped using ads in the past.

@PiecesOfMePaperCraft   I have never used them.  I think they're a waste of money.  I was told this "great offer".  For every $1.00 I spent, I could get back $2.87.  That is ONE THIRD ON TOP OF REGULAR FEES.  Not in this lifetime, lol.

Etsy will gladly take your money for ads, regardless if a seller knows what they're doing or not when it comes to using Etsy advertising. I have clicks that cost me as low as 1 cent and in the last 30 days, I made over $226+ on $32+ ad spend, so I am happy with them.

We have just noticed this as well.  Typically around the $0.40-$0.50 range for clicks over the past year and we're talking 10's of thousands.  May 20th and May 22nd I noticed we tripled our spend for the same traffic.  Today the 24th is the same.  We have some clicks as high as $1.97 each.

I contacted support about it and all I got was a canned response and they couldn't be bothered to look at the data to see an obviously glaring discrepancy over a large data set.

I haven't seen any that high, but I have seen lots that are over $1.00 per click. We don't know if they have increased the cost of clicks recently. It is very possible, since their earnings have been down, and stockholders are putting pressure on them to bring in more profit. When they first started EtsyAds, you could get some clicks for a penny and could specify the maximum you were willing to pay for a click. Oh, the good old days...

I had listing today, both in the same category, both new listings with no sales history, both clicks from the same keyword, one click cost $0.14 and the other $0.98.
