On the new listing form, there is no option to navigate through the categories to find the correct one for the item. I can only enter a search term and pick from the suggestions Etsy is giving me, which are not what I am looking for.
E.g. I have just listed a quite colourful vintage button up shirt/blouse that could be worn by men or women, hence I'd like to list it under gender-neutral clothing. When I search for "shirt", the only gender-neutral category that comes up is t-shirts. I can also list it as women's blouses or men's oxford shirts. Neither of these reflect the full scope of the item.
If there is no button-up shirt category in gender-neutral clothing, I'd prefer it to be in gender-neutral clothing without subcategory - but the new listing form doesn't let me choose. It also doesn't let me look through all the categories to see what's there and what would be the best fit.
I wasn't happy with the new listing form to begin with, but if this is what it means from now on, i.e. severe decline of category accuracy, then I am seriously thinking of alternative platforms.
This is NOT a small issue, especially for vintage sellers who are doing a lot of listings in a lot of different subcategories. I do not have the time to work around such issues for every listing (even if I could). I could have listed 5 items on the 'bay at the same time, and all the keywords and categories would be correct.
Was this option available on the old form? If not then it is because Etsy can't cover every eventuality so you just pick a category which is closest.
Yes, the old form had an option to search the categories if the 5 or so suggestions did not match your item.
Yes, this is a BIG deal which is getting little attention although I highlight it in every survey/comment. For now you can see a complete category list (in a not very helpful form) here. Etsy :: Your place to buy and sell all things handmade
when browsing categories as a buyer (in the USA, but hopefully the categories are the same), Oxford is a sub-category under 'Gender Neutral Adult Tops and Tees'. Have you tried selecting T-shirts under the gender-neutral category when making a listing? Hopefully sub-categories are then shown to choose from??
A button front shirt is not gender neutral. Women's shirts have the buttons on the left, men's shirts have the buttons on the right and it is awkward buttoning a man's shirt if you are a woman and visa versa.
Exactly right. People who are not worried about how it buttons will search for opposite gender items, so it's not the end of the world to list one or the other, imo. It's actually misleading to say it's gender neutral when it's clearly one or the other, and can lead to "not as described" claims.
I also want to complain about this issue. I'm trying to list a vintage boys hunting cap. I just want to put it in the general category as "Hats & Caps" but in trying to do that it ends up in the wedding section. That is not helpful.
Why cant we have the drill down options to list in the category we want from the recently done away listing template?
Same problem. Need to list a gender neutral vintage kids coat, I can see that there is such a category in the complete category list, but can't choose it for my listing. The automated search only offers some irrelevant options, including ones not connected to clothing at all. Not sure what to do. I wish there was an option to choose the category manually, like it was in the old listing form.
As mention, button shirt can’t be gender neutral
Actually it can, never mind the buttoning side. Also - Etsy has Gender neutral Adult Clothing category with Oxfords and other buttoned garments under it.
However the problem is not with the item being gender neutral. I tried listing girl's shoes and offered categories are not even remotely close to that. Closest being men's loafers.
Having this problem while listing a gender neutral vintage jean jacket for kids! I can't get anywhere near a category that makes any sense. Hope they can resolve this soon, it was driving me nuts yesterday while listing in my adult vintage store too!!!
I also have the same issue with the new form (I liked the old form, I used it up until the very end). I'm a POD seller and in the old form I could navigate through the categories to Clothing>Men's Clothing>Trousers>Leggings. Now you only get to Trousers apparently leggings for men no longer exist!!. Leggings are definitely not Trousers. Bring back the navigation option or the old form.
