Hi everyone,
I am looking for some advice. I got an email from conversations@mail.etsy.com saying someone had emailed me about a listing. Which didn't seem unusual I am currently collaborating with another artist through Etsy messages so I've gotten alot of emails that look exactly like this recently, same email address, same layout, etc. So anyways the person asked for an email address so they could talk toe directly about a painting they were interested in. I thought it was weird but not that weird but I wanted to see who it was before giving out PII so I clicked on their new to bring up their account. Then an Etsy page with a user not found message came up. So I went to a new tab and got on Etsy do see the message directly on the site but there is no record of it on etsy. Which sketched me out. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm trying to figure out if it's phishing for personal information or someone you doesn't have an account or something.

Usually this means you received a message from someone that is spamming/scamming people, others have reported it and etsy has banned the user, and ends up removing the message you were sent.

Hello!
Prior to posting in a thread in the Forums, we ask that you please check if you are not bumping an old thread that hasn't seen any activity in a few months (or years, even). If that is the case, and you still would like to share your thoughts and get the conversation going - whether about this or similar topics, we ask that you start your own thread instead of bumping an old one.
Please note that reviving old threads can cause confusion for members reading, so always check the dates of the most recent replies before posting. You can find this information on the top-left corner of each message, just below the member's username and profile picture.
Having said that, we are closing this thread as it is indeed a bit older, and the information contained here may be outdated.
Thank you!

Re: Email from Etsy conversations that doesn't appear on Etsy itself
@ValentinePaintings Convos are being lumped together with past messages. It's Etsy's idea of an improvement for all the people complaining about the Star Seller metric for multiple convo threads started by the same person. Can you search your messages for the user name? It may be attached to a past message.

I just checked a recent email for a convo, and it was from conversations@mail.etsy.com

Thank you for this advice. It's good to know, but when I searched nothing came up. I'll keep this in mind for next time!

I read something similar in other threads some time ago and stated that it was more than likely a scam. I would avoid it.

Re: Email from Etsy conversations that doesn't appear on Etsy itself
@ValentinePaintings Yes, I think it was a phishing message by a scammer who got caught.
Within hour or so, I got a message from a person asking for my personal email so they could contact me about a stocking in my shop. I am very cautious, so I wrote back and said I need to keep messages on Etsy (etc.). Within less than 30 minutes, the messages and user completely disappeared from my message folder. I think there is a spammer going around trying to get email addresses to use for fraudulent purposes, and they got caught by Etsy.
I don't get copies of my messages in my email, so it didn't happen the way yours did. I actually saw and replied to the message. Then it all disappeared. In case it helps, they used the name "Amy."

That makes me feel a lot better because the person asking me was named Amy too

Well, that pretty much proves that's what it was. Too much of a coincidence.
@ValentinePaintings Sooo, I just looked at your shop and noticed that you're in Alexandria. I'm in Arlington. I wonder if that's a coincidence too, or whether someone is targeting Virginia shops. How weird.

Re: Email from Etsy conversations that doesn't appear on Etsy itself
I never take conversations off of Etsy if it is about a potential Etsy order. This way, it protects me the most. Some say you can write up a summary of a phone conversation and send it to the customer. In my experience if it was not originally documented Etsy will assume what you wrote up isn't true. As sellers we always have to "prove" ourselves. So, I just wouldn't call. If you do and they do have an actual account, get enough documented first on site if the transaction will happen on site. You never know what will happen...

This has been very helpful because I just received one of these convos about one of my listings and found it suspicious. I am glad to hear I am not the only one and that I was right in thinking it fishy.
