Hi everyone,
I’ve been waiting for over a month for Etsy’s system to validate my VAT number, but I keep running into the same issue. I’ve entered the exact same information that appears in the VIES database, yet Etsy still doesn’t recognize my data. I keep getting the warning:
“Your data doesn’t match the VIES database.”
I’ve contacted Etsy support four times, but none of the agents have been able to resolve the issue. This has been incredibly frustrating because I’m still being charged VAT even though I’ve already provided my VAT number.
Has anyone else faced this issue? Any advice on how to resolve it? This look like a glitch or bug.
Thanks in advance!
All the shop information has to match exactly. Your shop location is set as the United States, so you should not have to enter a EU VAT number
@DrippySouls: You claim to be located in the United States, so VAT registration should not apply to you?
Was your shop set up using the exact same name as is in the VIES database?
If you are selling on EU, VAT applies even if you are a United States shop. My shop has exactly the same data as the VIES and still doesn't work
@DrippySouls: Yes, US businesses are required to observe VAT laws, but VAT compliance and collection for applicable sales on a marketplace (like Etsy) are the responsibility of the marketplace.
The VIES system is owned by the European Commission, you would only enter your details in there if you live in one of the European member states, the United States is not one of them.
If you are trying to enter a European VAT number but your location says you are in the United States, this may affect everything from working correctly in your Etsy account.
