the last two customers who purchased digital PDF files have come back saying the pages won't print.
is this some kind of bug with the download, (anyone else experiencing this) or could it only be the issue is at the receiving end. ie their print settings, pc etc.
Can they open the files?
yes they can open it.
Not sure but what did they download the file to? Some of the portable devices, Tablet, Phone need to download to the browser, but because of a different operating system, they need an app to connect with wireless printing. If they downloaded to a computer that is connected to a printer, it is something in their settings.
It's most likely user error but I did go to print packing slips earlier today and got an error saying not a valid PDF. Hmm. Ok. Closed that and did it again, same error. Third time it was fine so maybe they just happened to DL at the same time there was a...what does Etsy call it? Ah. A hiccup, a stitch, whatever. Something was janky today. Maybe email in this instance?
Still most likely to be user error. It does slay me that Etsy *knows* the lions share of site usage is on a mobile device. You'd think they'd make a DD easily accessed through the app and not force a browser DL.
Some people don't even know what a browser is. *shrug*

ABSOLUTELY!!! Or the least they could do would be to put some kind of helpful message to users within the app, telling them what to do. But no, they let buyers get frustrated, who then have to contact the seller for info Etsy could have provided upfront.
A long-standing pet peeve of mine….
That happens to my customers from time to time. I ask them to redownload the file and try again (actually, I usually attach it to the Etsy message to make it a bit easier for them). Only one time did that not solve the problem. (If I recall, she had me send the file to her sister who had a different printer.)
There have been instances of iPhone users not being able to print. It's rare, but it does happen. So if you try to print from your phone and you get a message that 'the author has disabled printing', then you need to go to a laptop or desktop to print your pattern. I do wish I knew what causes that, but I'm afraid I don't. And while it is a lot rarer, it has also happened on Android based phone. And this seems to be the only problem our customers have regarding printing.
Thanks for mentioning this. So far, none of my customers have mentioned this particular error message, but it's good to know that using a non-mobile device is the solution.
I had this on another platform once. The customer service there informed me that they have solved the problem: They told the customer there is nothing wrong with the PDF file, she needs to update her printer driver on her computer. She did it and could print the file without problems.
