Best regards,

I didn't respond as none was necessary and now I don't get a star seller badge. Do I have any recourse?

A response was necessary for star seller. The criteria is very clear.
@BlingBeadedBar: Probably almost everyone on this forum can sympathize with you but a quick search would show you innumerable threads about your exact issue. As it says right on your Star Seller page, you need to reply to the FIRST message of a NEW THREAD. It does not matter who sent it, the subject matter, if it is a duplicate or blank or anything else. If it is SPAM then it should be marked as such. Those have always been the rules.
Do I have any recourse? NO

Please remove any information which may identify the other person's identity such as Shop Name etc

You got a message and you didn’t respond. There is no recourse because you chose not to answer like is required to get the SS award.
this also happened to me as well - trying to find the right link for customer service.
@CROSSANDSTITCHAU Please read the comments marked as "Solution" above
"Etsy Support can’t make changes to your Star Seller data or manually award Star Seller badges. If you think your Star Seller score was calculated incorrectly, you can let us know in the Technical Issues forum."

From everything I've read Etsy is not making any changes to anyone's status once it's done.
If you find out otherwise, please let us know!
Contacting CS for things like this is probably the reason we have no CS. They got tired of answering over and over what is clearly set out i the original rules. This star seller thing has been in effect for well over a year now--and CS has also said over and over they will NOT change your SS rating
In addition to the comments above, you should also be aware that if a buyer contacts you through a help request, it will open a new message thread. You can't reply in the convo thread for the order or it doesn't count as a reply. I learned this the hard way and lost my star seller status this month for the first time since it started, even though I replied within minutes.
Also, be aware that Etsy doesn't count messages in the last few days of the 3rd month in the cycle (apparently to give the seller time to respond, but even if you do, they don't count). This is the case even though on the star seller page they specifically state the dates as through the last day of the third month in the reporting period.
