Customer Requests shipping upgrade, and I pay for it - Is this new?

Jump to solution

Maybe I just noticed, but I'm recieving orders that are marked "Customer requests shipping upgrade," but, since I have the free shipping guarantee, I'm paying for the upgrade. I've done some research, and it seems it's a package weight issue about flipping to Priority. I tried to adjust my shipping profile to only offer First Class, but I receive an error saying I have 102 listings that will be without a shipping profile. I only carry a couple of items whose individual weight is over 7 ounces.

I'm considering removing the Free Shipping Guarantee to avoid $8+ shipping charges. Can someone give me some insight? If the free shipping guarantee isn't getting me better placement, I'm more than willing to end it.

@TheSatinBee   I just added over $35 to cart to see the free shipping, but there is a drop-down where I can choose shipping upgrades - for a price.  So go to the order, click to open the full receipt, and see if your Buyer paid for the upgrade.  I've been getting that notice on some orders, and yes, the Buyers paid the extra.

I offer my customers 3 grades of shipping: First Class (under 16 oz), Prority Mail (16 oz and over) or 2 Day Express Mail (any weight but it costs at least 4 times more than Priority). Customers don't see the shipping options until they start checking out. Then they can choose the one they want, and pay accordingly. I think you could offer Free First Class, then Priority and Express. I'm not sure how you set that up, since I don't offer free shipping on any amount.

" If the free shipping guarantee isn't getting me better placement, I'm more than willing to end it."

It doesn't, at least not noticeably.

End it.

I did the $35/free shipping...never made any difference in my sales.

Then I did free shipping...never made any difference in my sales.

I removed free shipping.  The week after I did I got a sale.  It was a sign.

I just blew 2 hours figuring this out, and it comes back to an Etsy glitch.

Etsy recently rolled out a "shop-wide' Free Shipping promotion, which applies to every item on your shop, if you agree to it.

--> The problem is the "free shipping" discount also applies the UPGRADE FEE if a customer selects an upgraded service (e.g., Priority or Express), giving them a free upgrade!!

If you want to offer free shipping for ground, and charge them to upgrade to a faster service:

  • Turn off the Free Shipping Guarantee that applies to your whole shop
  • Create a shipping profile that MUST INCLUDE the basic ground service
    • You can add upgrades, but it must include the cheapest ground service, or else it will consider the cheapest upgrade the free shipping included with the purchase
  • Check the box that says "Free Domestic Shipping".  If you want this to offer free International shipping, you can check that box, too...or not.

Now, when someone checks out, it will give them the option to pay for the upgraded shipping.  I hope that helps!!

I just had a buyer request the shipping upgrade, and Etsy only charged $2.62 for the entire shipping amount.  I do not offer free shipping, so apparently Etsy only charged them for the upgrade and ignored the original shipping cost.  It was for 2 items, and if I had not been able to combine them in one package, it would have cost me over $20 to ship (ridiculous since these were small and very light weight items).  I did go ahead and honor the order since it is a repeat customer, but I immediately went and turned the shipping upgrade option off.
