Cuidado Fraude!

Jump to solution

If you receive a suspicious message, here’s how to report it:

  1. Sign in to Etsy.com and go to Your Account.
  2. Go to Messages
  3. Select the suspicious message from your inbox.
  4. Choose Mark as Spam.

You’ll find examples of common scammer techniques and phishing messages here in our Help Center. Read our Account Security Checklist in the Seller Handbook for more steps you can take to protect your account.

I am so sorry you were scammed.  Scammers prey on vulnerabilities, and figure new sellers might not be overly familiar with how things work here.

Hopefully you have contacted your bank, they would be the only ones to be able to help you.  Etsy has set up a special "from Etsy" folder in our messages:  if the message claims to be from Etsy, and is in the general folder, it is NOT from Etsy.  There is also a warning, something about not clicking links or going off Etsy.

NO ONE needs to know how much you have in your bank, I say this not wondering how people can fall for that, but wondering what scam has MY name on it.  Scammers can sound very convincing.

Unfortunately, scams are rampant online and off, and Etsy, though they try to protect us from scammers, cannot be held responsible any more than your phone provider can be responsible for any phone scams, or your email provider from scams in your email.

It is up to us to be extremely aware and cautious, not just on Etsy, but everywhere.

Sorry this has happened to you. Etsy can only do so much, same as your bank, phone provider and anything else that uses a messaging system.

They can put warnings out (which they have) but ultimately you are control when it comes to supplying someone with your information or taken actions. Etsy messenger is no different from some stranger sending you a text alert to your phone asking you to click on a link or verify something. Never click on links, image files or give out any personal or financial information via any messenger.

You need to contact your bank, and hope they have fraud protection on your account, this way at least, you may get your funds back. Also request from your bank that they block your card and send you a new one.

Etsy will not be able to do anything, it is different if the site was hacked, but not if details were given freely.

I'm very sorry this has happened to you, but this is not on Etsy.  Anyone can message you on Etsy, and there are warnings on all new messages about not taking the conversation of Etsy by clicking on any links etc...  You have voluntarily taken the exchange off Etsy so it is your responsibility.  All you can do now is contact your bank immediately, if you haven't already, and hope they have some kind of fraud protection scheme.

If you receive an actual order, you will see it in your "Orders and Shipping" section and you will receive an email from Etsy notifying you that you have a sale, and there will be a notification in your dashboard as well.
