Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
For those whose shops were put on forced vacation mode, the troubles may not end once your shop is restored. Don’t breathe too easily just yet.
The first thing you should do when your shop is back is check your monthly statements.
When my shop was restored this afternoon, it didn’t look like the same shop it was before the incident. For example, the listing arrangements and featured products were all out of place. I couldn’t feature products or collections on my main page because the function was bugged. I had a weird feeling, so I immediately checked my monthly statements and discovered that I was charged listing fees and tax for all 1,021 products in my shop—$247.04 CAD at once. I contacted customer service via chat right away and was able to get a refund. The explanation I received was that all the listings were deactivated when the shop was in vacation mode, and when it was restored, the listings were relisted automatically, which generated bills.
I’m so glad I followed my instinct and checked. Otherwise, in addition to the financial loss during the vacation mode, I would have faced another loss due to these mistaken fees.
And when calculating the amount you should be refunded, make sure to do your own calculations first. The first agent I spoke with didn’t verify the amount properly and issued me a rough refund, which was incorrect. I had to contact them a second time to get the rest refunded.

Re: Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
I posted in the forum twice yesterday, and my shop was restored right away without any explanation or notification. Etsy did not contact me or request any new documents or information. My original request submitted through the Help Center also remains unanswered.

OMG! I’m glad they corrected it for you but geez... That’s the kind of thing that (in mass cases) gets media attention!

Re: Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
I’m not sure if they would have refunded me if I hadn’t discovered the issue myself. Even the agent seemed surprised. This is something that shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

Re: Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
An idea just flashed through my mind—if one issue like this forced vacation mode can happen, there must be a lot more hidden beneath the surface. It’s like seeing one cockroach in your house; you just know there are thousands more you don’t see.

Re: Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
@GenWoo Etsy relisting items rather than simply reactivating the listings is the biggest glitch I've heard about in awhile. I mean seriously, it's LOGIC!!! Deactivate -> Reactivate. Thanks for warning the rest of us!
Obviously, if all of your listings had expired while you were on forced vacation mode, it would make more sense, but Etsy should (and I'm sure, could) credit the listings for the time you were on forced vacation. But I think it would be very unusual for every listing in a shop to expire at approximately the same time.
BTW, did you ever find out why you were put on forced vacation???

Re: Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
Unfortunately, I still don’t know why my shop was forced into vacation mode—no explanation for being put in, and no explanation for being brought back.
The only explanation I received was that all my listings were deactivated by Etsy when the shop was forced into vacation mode. This makes me wonder if Etsy assumed all my listings broke their rules.

@GenWoo I took a quick glance at your shop but didn't see anything that looked infringing.
You've probably read that Etsy is using bots for this. Or at least we're assuming they are, because that's all we've got! And those buggers aren't always as smart as they should be.

Re: Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
complete insanity.
I am having such a hard time wrapping my head around the amateur hour Etsy has become. Are they purposely sabotaging their site? Or just no humans left at the helm, at all?
Just wow.

Re: Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
The Etsy ship has sprung so many unattended leaks, it certainly makes one wonder what the game plan is going forward. This is not what a business does when trying to optimize and improve its reputation in a competitive market.
It's left many of us to speculate about what's happening to Etsy.

Re: Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
@PWOriginals Is there any reason that Etsy might be trying to sink their own ship? I can't wrap my head around this concept.

Re: Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
I did not intend to infer that it was Etsy poking the holes in the ship, but that it's Etsy that's not plugging them up.
When there are changes in upper management, which Etsy has had just recently, other staff may have their duties re-focused as well. This could make for a very confusing time.
The site is suffering from neglect, and I just hope those holes get plugged and the Etsy ship rights itself sooner than later.

Re: Check Your Monthly Statements After Your Shop is Restored from Forced Vacation Mode
@PWOriginals Sorry, I didn't mean for my response to sound like I thought you'd said that Etsy was poking holes in the ship. I was just tossing my own thoughts into the mix.
Is it possible those at the helm, and even elsewhere in the wheelhouse, have lost their enthusiasm for Etsy? Even when I'm frustrated with Etsy, I still have some enthusiasm for this site. I want it to succeed!

All's good! I have my own thoughts, too, most which I don't share - it's just speculation on my part.

Good grief. This place is a literal dumpster fire. Seeing all the forced vacation mode incidents (in DECEMBER!) has been disheartening, and they keep piling on the incompetence.

@GenWoo - how did your shop get out of vacation mode? How long was it on for? Did it ruin your algorithms? My shop was put on vacation mode two days ago & I'm freaking out.
