I had to close my business bank account and change to a new bank. I've been able to update it everywhere except Etsy. Etsy requires that you enter the old account number to confirm the bank.. which makes no sense. The old bank redacts the account number on all my statements and without a current account I can't look up the number on their site. They never sent me checks like they were supposed to. I did manage to edit one of the statement PDF's and deleted black rectangle redacting my account number (Seriously, this bank was terrible.) Regardless if I copy and paste that account number, type it in number by number, use Safari, Firefox, Chrome- Etsy always says the account doesn't match the account number on record.
I've tried contacting etsy support but for hours now it takes me to the same error page. Again, same thing in Safari & Chrome, cleared cache on each.
"Whoopsie!
Etsy just had a hiccup.
You can try refreshing your page in a few moments. If this is a
widespread issue, you'll be able to find details at

Following the http://etsystatus.com shows no incidents at all today and that all systems are operational- in 2027.

2027? At least they didn't "redact" it with a black rectangle.
Is there any other solution to this? Do I need to put dashes in the account number? Do I need to wait for a specific time to try to get support?

Confirming the old account number is a security measure - if a hacker breaks in to a shop account it's just that little bit harder for them to redirect funds to a different bank account.
Is this where you're going to access Etsy Support? https://etsy.com/help/contact - choosing options until you get the "I still need help" button and then choosing email, live chat and/or call back (different options appear for different support topics, different times of day, and for different users)?
I ONLY GET THE EMAIL OPTION FOR A CONTACT I NEVER GET TO CHOOSE FOR A PHONE CALL OR LIVE CHAT . THE EMAIL IS USELESS
You have no record anywhere of the old bank account? With proper ID, you should be able to go to the bank and get that information. Or, if you ever had direct deposit with W2s or tax refunds, you should have that information.
As stated above, this is for your protection. Otherwise, anyone could go in and change your bank account.
As stated above- I did find the account number, but Etsy would not accept it. The bank would mail me an audit of the account with all of the statements, but again, with the account number redacted.
I did get Etsy support page to load and sent an email. They got back to me quickly and manually removed the old account number. They asked for the last 4 numbers of the current bank account listed on finances, the current payout balance and a description of the draft listings.
With regards why they require the old account number, intent is fine but it isn't a particularly secure or effective solution for ID verification. I'd argue that Etsy normalizing bank account number as ID verification just helps phishing attackers to steal not only login info but bank account numbers. Imagine a fake email from Etsy claiming that a user's bank account has been change. It links to a fake Etsy login page where it steals their ID and password, then a fake copy of the Etsy payment methods page. You want users to say "that's weird, why would it ask for my bank account number?" then look at the URL, say oh this is fake, let me go change my login info on the real site immediately. You DON'T want them to say "right, that's normal Etsy needs my bank account number to verify who I am," and give that up to a low-effort phishing attack and leave the fake site thinking all is well.
Ebay allows you to remove a bank account and holds payments until a new one is added. It required test deposits and sent multiple emails confirming the change. Stripe allows you to simply edit the account number and routing number, but uses proper hardware 2FA, and also sent multiple emails confirming the change.
There are other, more secure options. Hardware 2FA, email or phone 2FA, even security questions, would be more secure. The fact it failed and required a support contact could have been a more effective verification process but the things they asked for are all things that anyone with access to the Etsy account can already see. They even provided links to the pages in the Etsy account where I could look it up.

This is simply not the case. This option is broken and need to be fixed by a programmer.
They ask for your account number.
You type it in correctly (you're doing exactly what is being request.
It doesn't work. period.

A security feature narrative usually looks like this.
- Want to change your account number, and you have confirmed your old account number?
- We'll send you a code to your email on file.
- Type in the code, and you will be able to enter the new information regarding your account.
Not the mess we have to put up with here.
Several similar posts in the past few days. This is something recent - may have to do with Plaid.
I agree - entirely outrageous. I'm also dealing with this in my shop, as are other sellers.
On a side note, It took them TWO YEARS before they fixed a 'policy update' shop feature that wasn't functioning properly. Yes, two years.
Also, it does not have anything to do with Plaid. It wasn't working six months ago, as I can attest and older seller posts confirm that.
Confirming the old account number is a security measure - if a hacker breaks in to a shop account it's just that little bit harder for them to redirect funds to a different bank account.
When you comply, the bank account information you've entered invariably gets rejected, so you can't move forward.
This is an admin tech problem not a seller comprehension skill problem.
YES, thank you. I am also having this issue. It is not a Plaid problem—I can't even get to the part where I'm trying to connect with Plaid. It's an Etsy problem. So far the two help emails I've gotten have been completely unhelpful
ANY SOLUTION???
@fatpoppydesign : If you follow this forum you will quickly understand why Etsy tries to weed out some support requests. Every eMail from Etsy support will have a link something like "I Still Need Help". Click on that link in each reply from Etsy (or actually reply stating that you still need help) to keep the report alive. You may have to do this innumerable times, before anything is done but do not give up. DO NOT open a new issue or contact Etsy multiple times about the same issue (doing so closes the one you already opened and puts the new one on the bottom of the pile).
I have a similar problem.. I opened up a ticket before but i still dont know what to do. no response from etsy.
I currently no longer use the account that was setup under my previous sales- so I need to update that before it will let me verify it-- but it will not let me add a different account and delete the existing one.
I DO have the old account number..but plaid wont sucessfully verify because i do not have an online account setup for this bank account (because the bank acct is no longer operational).
. I need to update this to a valid bank account so it then can be verified. Can not figure out how to do it...
In your case you have to contact Etsy Support. I had the same issue and they unlinked the bank account in my payment settings so I could enter the new one.
Email worked for me for this shop but I had to wait 3 days for a response, 5 days total to get it resolved. For my other shop I requested a callback and it was taken care of then and there on the phone. See if this works for you:
Request a Callback:
https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?segment=selling#issue_sell_manage_listings-callback
Ask them to unlink your bank account because you no longer have it.
Thanks!
Thank You @ZehOriginalArt I had the same issue and followed your suggestion and it worked.
It's October 10, 2024, and I'm having the exact same issue. I'm trying change my bank account number and it just keeps sending me in a loop by making me add my old bank account number, etc.
