Buyers receiving an order confirmation email as well as this item is sold out email

Two buyers in the past couple days received 2 emails directly after their purchase. The first is an order confirmation.....the second is a this item is sold out. They are very confused as we are also. Messages below from our customers.  Is this a glitch, test or something else. Please look into this as it reflects on our shop as well as it is time consuming to try and explain something we are unaware of and have no control of on our end.

"First I got a confirmation, then an email that says it's SOLD OUT - I'm confused!"

"So the order did go through? First, I received an email confirming my order, then received an email saying, "It's gone for now."

I have just heard back from Etsy support with exactly the same advice - 're-activate your sold out listings and list the quantity as more than one so that the email won't be sent to your buyer and to prevent this moving forward'. Clearly this is the advice they're sending to people whose shops have been affected by this, which seems bizarre. Other than a couple of listings, everything is one of a kind. I would be deceiving the buyer if I listed more than one. Many of my sales are made overnight, which runs the risk of a buyer buying two of an ornament there's only one of, or a second person buying one that doesn't exist, surely?

You're right, following that advice would lead to more issues. Whoever came up with that script response has not understood the problem, not the consequences of the solution they're recommending.

Wow, that's really terrible advice. Suppose you actually wanted to keep accurate inventory numbers? And what if the customer buys both of them in that one order? (They'd buy something that didn't exist, and then receive the sold-out message anyway!)

I see these sort of responses from ETSY as a warning sign. A sign that they feel comfortable giving out advice that is not helping people, knowing they're doing it and knowing that the managers are permitting it to go on. Feeling a bit like this is a sign that ETSY is thin on good employees and behaving poorly. Best advice, don't buy ETSY stock and hope they pull out of the nose dive for everyone's sake ......
