Recently I have moved banks. As such our old bank card has become invalid/expired. Also, I have created a business bank account through Mettle. Unfortunately after changing my card details over to the new business bank card, I was still being told my card had expired (last digits of old card). Also, I was still not being paid by Etsy. Having raised this in a support call, I was told my new card was not valid and I would have to use my new personal account. Having changed the billing card to be my personal account, Etsy then paid money owed to my business bank account. Now Etsy has taken money from my personal account for a refund.
I’m seriously losing faith in Etsy, not only for the current influx of cheap imported goods (not crafted) but also for the inability to manage payments through cards.
Where you are paid (bank account) and the billing card used for refunds (under billing) are 2 separate things.
Etsy doesn't deposit to the card, and the card on file is used for refunds.
If the bank details you have given are your business account, then it will deposit funds there.
If the card on file is now your personal account, any refunds will be charged it that card.
I understand that they are two separate things. My issue is that Etsy would not pay us money owed until we updated our billing account card. The billing card had expired and despite having used a new card, Etsy would still have a problem with our old card being expired.
If you refund, and there is not enough money in "available to deposit" etsy takes the money from the card on file.
If that card is linked to your personal account, then that's where the money will come from, if it is a credit card, it will come from there, if it is a reloadable prepayment card, it will come from there.
All etsy needs is a card that matches the name on file, that is in date (ie the date you entered on etsy is in date), master card, visa, or re-loadable prepayment card.
if they said the card expired, it was a date issue, if they said it was invalid, there was something not matching with the legal name field, or a mis-typed number, or not the right type of card (above)
The card I have on file is linked to my business account.
....
Etsy deposits to the account in the payment section,
The billing card has to be in date, on etsy, for funds to transfer to your bank
The bank account was current, the card on file had expired but had been replaced with new valid card details. Etsy would not pay us money owed as they still complained that the old, removed card was expired (even showing the last four digits of the card no longer on file). On the advice of the Etsy support staff, we had to enter a personal card in order to be paid. Once personal card details had been entered, the money was then paid the next day into the business account. This is not a good way of working.
Etsy deposits to the bank account in the payments section
If they refund, and there is no money in "available to deposit", they take the money from the card in the "billing" section.
If your card in the billing section, is not valid for any reason, etsy will not deposit money to your bank, as they have no other way of recouping refunds.
They cannot take from your bank, just whatever card is in the billing section.
I have a card, linked to my business account, in the billing section.
There was obviously something about the new card that did not "take" , most often, it's the name not matching the legal section, even an initial, instead of a middle name, can trigger it, if they are different in different places.
Thanks for your response.
The problem is that the card in the billing section is/was valid and had been for two weeks.
The card that Etsy was still complaining about had been removed two weeks prior.
On Etsy support advice, the personal card was added to the account. Once the personal card had been added, the money was paid into the business account. I’m trying to highlight a bug to Etsy around billing card handling, but apparently this is not possible.
From etsy's point of view, it wasn't valid,
was the name, printed on the business card, identical to the name, in your legal and tax information section?
If you don't have a valid card on file for billing (like in the case of refunds) Etsy won't transfer you funds, so even though the can be separate things, they can affect your deposits.
You should be able to enter your new billing card, then after a day or so, make it the default.
The new bank account probably needed to be verified thru Plaid - did you see that? If you are still having issues, you'll need to contact Etsy Support. Good luck!
We did have a valid card on file. Etsy was still complaining about a card that was no longer on file being expired. I tried Etsy support, but they were the ones claiming we needed to use a personal card to be paid.
@SpoiltKitty did you enter the new expiration date?
The VALID new card had been on file for two weeks.
Did you make the new business card the default card?
If not, it would still see the old unvalid card as the default.
You then can't remove a default card, until you make another card default.
Did you get an email from Etsy saying “make sure you get paid, there seems to be a problem with your billing card”? because after my card expired I updated it with the new details & all of a sudden my card keeps getting removed after I add it & it’s been ongoing for months. They still can’t figure out the problem & I don’t want to use my other card. I contacted my bank & they said it’s not my card since it’s valid. I know it’s an Etsy glitch or something that they still can’t figure out.
