At the top of my shop dashboard (below where it says "What's new, [shop name here]?"), it says I have 14 orders, instead of 14 sales. I actually only have 9 order, so Etsy got it mixed up.
Thank you!
If you look at your Stats page and set it for All Time, it will show the number of orders, while the dashboard shows number of items sold. Etsy isn't always careful with word choice in its distinction between orders vs. items sold.
When using numbers in places where the public can see them, it uses number of items sold so that you have a bigger number, on the assumption that will garner more trust from buyers.
That probably happens to all of us; your numbers can be different if you have more than one item in a sale.

Sometimes sales means number of orders, sometimes it means how many transactions (so if persons buys two of the same item it only counts as 1) and occasionally it is the actual number of "pieces" you have sold. Consistent semantics is not a strong point here.
