Applying for Sales Tax ID...

I'm doing a craft show and wondered how long it takes to get a sales tax ID here in Omaha, NE?

Is there any cost to apply? Can you get the application online?

Elise,
You actually have to get your Federal Employer ID number first. Which you can do online through the IRS website (scroll down to the apply online now link): http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102767,00.html

I think it give you the number right away, so you can apply for the NE tax ID number, but that you will have to submit and then they send it in the mail. But it is pretty fast, mayb a week.

Then you can file form 20, the NE Tax Application to get your tax id number:
http://www.revenue.ne.gov/tax/current/fill-in/f_20.pdf

All of this is free, don't pay for it. There are websites that make it seem like you have to pay, but they are scams.

Hey Elsie, if you don't have employees, you are not required to have the Federal Employee ID actually. If you plan to hire employees eventually you can go ahead and do so, but you don't need to do so before you apply for the NE sales tax ID. If you don't have the Federal ID you can just use your social security number. It took me just a couple weeks to receive my sales tax IDs for both NE and IA.

The paperwork is fairly easy and FREE (as Liz said).

I didn't have to apply for a Federal Employee ID because I don't have employees nor do I plan to. I applied for free online and was surprised at how quickly I got it in the mail! It was really easy!

I sent in a form to register my business name in NE. I probably didn't really have to do that based on what you guys are saying. I'm also planning to file the form 20 tomorrow.

If it is a larger craft show, like those at the CentruyLink, the show host should provide you with a form for a temporary tax permit during the craft fair. You can fill out the form and send it in with the tax collected if you run out of time to get your permanent sales tax permit before the event.
