Re: World Vision related discussion and questions

Does World Vision have a program for getting sewing machines to women and helping them start a business? I have a desire to help disadvantaged women obtain sewing machines.
Thanks,
Terry

Re: World Vision related discussion and questions

Excellent question Terry. World Vision has a micro-loan program that helps both men and women in various countries. A person applying for a loan may come from many different industries such as farming or retail, and that includes those in the textile industry. The loans requested are in different amounts, you can choose to donate the entire amount, or donate a percentage (others donate percentages as well to eventually make up the full amount asked for.) There is a picture and a bio for each person applying for a micro-loan, as well as a description of what they plan to buy with the money. If one particular cause speaks to you, such as helping women, you can look through the micro-loan pages to see if there is a woman in the textile industry looking for a loan for that purpose. If you choose to donate, you will receive updates on how your money was used and how things are working out.

Re: World Vision related discussion and questions

On the main World Vision website, there is a tab called "Ways to Give". Under that tab you will see "Fund a Micro Loan". Click that link and on that page you can narrow down your search of those asking for Micro-Loans, including by gender.

I also want to add that even if you don't find the particular cause you're looking for at the moment, you should check back at a different time because the list of people and causes does change often.

Re: World Vision related discussion and questions

Since I am on a roll tonight, I will say that under the search of those asking for micro-loans in the retail industry (which is where you will find those looking to sell textiles and other sewing materials), there is one lady in Mexico, Rosalina, that is asking for a micro-loan for yarn, thread, and cloths to create handcrafts to sell. I think that's pretty cool, like she could be a fellow member of Etsy :)

Good question Linda. I think an appropriate tag would be "SWVOE". I will add that information on the front page.

Re: World Vision related discussion and questions

Terry,
In case you have checked back, I also want to address your interest in helping women and girls in a different way.
On World Vision's site there is the Gift Catalog with the category Girls & Women. There you can donate to different causes such as Career Training for Women and Girls, Share of a Sewing Machine and Training, and a Sewing Machine.
