What do you consider a scrap!?

I am relatively new to sewing and I am trying to organize my fabric stash...

I don't want to hang on to EVERYTHING, but I also don't want to throw away something that can be used later on... I'd love to hear any guidelines you follow to determine what to keep and what to trash!

So I am curious... What do you consider a scrap!?

Re: What do you consider a scrap!?

i consider anything too small to make a bow out of to be scrap. as for knit items i make headbands (then bows) as for thicker fabric i consider most of it scrap, anything i cant use to make a bag out of later on, or scrap piece not thick enough to add onto another fabric for a block of fabric for a bag. my bags can get pretty small too so i do feel like i hold onto a lot of scrap! just find a way to sort it and pack it away for a rainy day :) im slowly going through my scrap, but it takes time.

Re: What do you consider a scrap!?

Oh the scraps, I have many!
I probably keep more than I should, but I do try to separate them by size. If they are less than 2 inches I have a large gift bag they go in. When the bag gets full, they are turned into a dog bed for a dog shelter, foster dog or just to a dog in need of a new place to sleep.

That's an awesome idea, Libby! I love animals!!

I sorted through my scraps last night and I ended up keeping almost all of them.. I organized them by color in a set of stackable drawers!!

I'm sure I'll come across projects where they can be used :)

Re: What do you consider a scrap!?

It is hard to get rid of our beautiful scraps.
They do seem to multiply, don't they?
You'll figure out something to do with them,
maybe make a scrap quilt or doll quilt.
For now you are nicely organized!

I keep it until its too small to do anything with.
I do applique, so very small pieces can be used for noses, eyes and such.
But it sorted and bagged by size.

Re: What do you consider a scrap!?

I keep everything over 2" square. And keep the small corners when cutting triangles as they are perfect for the corners of a string quilt. I also am planning to bag and sell scraps since I have so much.
