How do you store your fabric scraps

I am over flowing with my fabric scraps. Can't seem to toss any either. I keep thinking I may need them all some day. How do you store your fabric scraps?

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

I use fabric scraps for making my jewellery and keep them in jars on my shelf!
They look great in glass sweet jars or kilner jars especially if you have a colourful mix!!
Larger scraps I tend to store in 'really useful' boxes.
I've been thinking about new ideas though as I am overrun with fabric too...

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

I have been using the packaging from sheets...they seem to be the perfect size for little pieces and they have a zipper so they don't overflow everywhere!

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

tackey, but functional...I use the flat box that 4 (?) six-packs come in.. Not the best for long term storage maybe, but wonderful when I get out oodles of scraps at one time.

If the boxes are not too heavy, they will stack up, alternating the direction they point to...if the box is level full, they will stack up in a neat stack.

The scraps will lay flat---no pressing. good scraping y'all midlred

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

I keep my scraps in a drawer and in pretty box containers. For some reason I have the hardest time throwing away fabric scraps.

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

I have seen a lot of ideas on storing little bits of fabric - plastic boxes, big glass jars, hand-made patchworked boxes without lid, ...
always organized by colours.

but how I store mine? well, when I started, I was organized. The more fabric I got, the system was disappearing. and now I have fabrics everywhere, in every draw, on every shelf, on every coathanger, ... well, I am definitely not an example to follow :-)

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

I have a good system.... for the odd bits over 1.5 by something I put in a baggie and gift to my friend who does miniature Hexies. or paper piecing... shudder.
for over 2.5 by something I sort by background color and into a ziplock it goes.
when I have too many ziplocs in the open top basket, they get cut for strips and then sewn into strips <think Jelly roll> then I know eventually I will do a scrappy strip quilt to donate. or again to my miniature making friend.

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

Dahlia-Your system reminded me of someone who would cut the fabric in strips and would crochet something! I think she used her serger ....removed needles and used the blade to cut perfect strips! Now I need time to do this too! :o)

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

in order to keep my scraps I used totes like most people, I try to classify hem by seaon, sometimes fabric creator, and at times sometimes the heavier fabrics in a tote by themselves, but when I looking for a fabric, lookout it all goes haywire.

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

I just stick mine in a plastic tote. When get a bunch of scraps I try to use them all. If I can't or don't feel like messing with it, I donate them to the local school for the home and careers class.

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

I am a fabric hoarder. I just can't seem to throw away fabric scraps because they might come in handy someday. That why I started making scrunchies and ornaments. (Hope it's ok to pst a pic of them here, just for an example) I have a nightstand converted into a fabric stash hiding place and I just bought two big plastic totes.

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

I tend to stuff them into those slightly larger than shoe-box size rubbermaid totes. Now that I am on tote #3 thats overflowing with scrapes, the hubby is making me admit I have a problem - I need to do something with them, I need to toss them or I need to donate them! aaaack!

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

I bought closet organizers for purses or sweaters with about 5 sections. I hang them in my closet and organize by color, I have another one that I use for batting scraps and organize by size. This way I can see everything.

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

No room for scraps but if the fabric was expensive or the scrap is big enough I will save it. All my fabrics are rolled up and color coded on shelves. Would say at least half my sewing room walls are fabric and smaller pieces of fabric have there own shelf.

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

Depends what you do really.
I make bigger things so I tend to only keep scraps that I know I am going to use.
The smaller ones I either keep for filling certain items, or toss them. Sorry.

Smaller things that I usually keep are blacks and whites. Because I always need them for eyes or eye-shine and stuff like that. But other colors not so much.

Tend to keep them in large transparent bins, not too large though. Just enough so I can see through it and pin point what I need :)

Re: How do you store your fabric scraps

I have two bins: one for bigger scraps that are not big enough for be to make bags out of, but are still a good size. I usually classify them by whether they are big enough for me to make a hair bow or not!
