To serge or not to serge that is the question?

I just used a serger for the first time while working on a group sewing service project and one of the ladies brought her serger in for us to use. I thought it was pretty cool but not really ready to invest in the money to get one at this point. I just use my own machine stitches to finish off raw edges. I do see that a lot of the listings by people who have large number of sales make sure to point out that their products are professionally serged. Just wonderiing what other's thoughts are about that? Do you thing the customer cares that much whether you use an expensive serger or not? Or do you have your own serger that you use?

If I were the buyer, I would not be worried about whether or not the edges were serged unless they were exposed. I grew up with a serger, but don't have one of my own, so my products are not surged, but I make sure they are carefully finished. If they are not going to be turned under or top stitched, I will do a zig-zag stitch around the edge.

I do the same thing with the zig zag Susan glad to hear I'm not the only one. Not everyone can afford to get a serger.

I am still learning, I do love how the serger works. But for finishes that are not exposed and if you are not ready for that kind of investment, I agree, a zig zag stitch will work.

If anyone knows of a good youtube video on how to work with a serger, please let me know :-D

I also just use a zig zag stitch on the edges of my bags. My boyfriend's grandma offered to buy me a serger, but I don't have the room for it right now. Currently my sewing machine sits on a tv tray surrounded by other tv trays as my work area! haha :)

I don't have a serger. I have heard they are difficult to thread. I think i would rather have a second machine before a serger, then i would not have to be swtching thread as much.

I also do not have a serger, and just use a zig-zag stitch to finish edges (though they are not exposed). If I were going to make clothing, I would probably consider getting a serger, but right now, I do not need one.
