I have had my shop since last summer and started out using promotions on Etsy. Sales were fairly consistent when I had those turned on and I thought it gave me good traction at the start. Now that I turned them off, I only get one order per month, if even!
I am in the process of updating my photos and adding more listings since some of them seemed to not gain as many views/favorites. I hope I can still be successful on Etsy without routing all my revenue to ads. Still fairly new to this and learning!
I found social media outlets can be helpful with driving traffic and a larger shop seems to drive more traffic as well. Hopeful I can start getting new orders!
