How do I create a treasury and why should I make one?

I am unclear as to what a treasury is and why it is beneficial to myself and others. Obviously to include my work and others in a group of related items in order to share, value and exhibit my favorite items and shops........but what else do I need to know, and mainly, how do I create one?! please help! I REALLY want to make one but figure I should find out what I am doing first! I have only had one sale so far but one is better than none! I am determined to figure out how to master this! Thanks so much! :)

Treasuries are what is referred to on Etsy as curated collections. Normally, many buyers and sellers on here create them to feature certain styles and themes into a cohesive collection. These would be handpicked to be featured on the front page of Etsy and considered to be quite a way to make the front page and get a nice promotional boost. However, the effectiveness of these are to be questioned. I have been in many many many treasuries in the past and even seen the front page myself however it did nothing to substantially boost sales or viewership in the long run. It is one of those things that you have to decide if it is worth your time as a form of marketing strategy. Quite frankly, I find spending time creating or listing product as being more effective.

Some things to note with treasuries if you intend to get them to make the front page: Do not add your own products into the treasury or supply shop items. Neither of these will get it handpicked by the Etsy staff for front page use.

Did you know internal links help you rank on Google? Internal links are any link you get from any page within Etsy. So if you have a product page that is generating high amounts of traffic and people simply love that page, link to a low traffic product page from the high traffic page to give it a boost.

Some treasuries can give you a boost as well. While doing research on why some Etsy shops were ranking and others did not on Google, treasury links were usually the boost.

When you are referring to internal linking as helping you, any shop on Etsy should only be concerned with the internal link of their own site domain. Etsy.com is a primary domain, each of our shops operate off of a subdomain. When you are internally linking throughout Etsy.com itself, you are helping Etsy. PERIOD.

Your subdomain shop such as (shopname).etsy.com is its own subdomain and your internal linkings would be things between your about, shop pages and listing product pages, etc. This is why I tell people to add links to their categories or other products internally in their own shop if you want to drive it up within the description section of your listings.

Etsy.com has a very high authority on Google well over the 90's. However, your own subdomain for your shop beneifts little from this in the longterm. Some shops I have none well over 5 years only find an authority level of possibly over 20 after a lot of hard work and sales. A treasury would be considered a newly created page with Google and drive no form of authority or Google juice outside of helping only Etsy as a whole. If you think linking yourself on a 0 page authority site with 12 other product links is going to boost your long term results, you are being misled. Sure you would see a short term boost of views because you are being promoted, but chances of conversion in that is very low. It is better to build up your own product pages and list more in your shop creating your own added internal pages and promote on social media and other realms from high ranking sites to gain outbound links and more Google love in the long term.

BTW: I would like to add, there is a reason why site such as Etsy do not allow clickable links to outside domains. Since they are a high ranking site, they would be giving away their site juice to other low ranking sites on Google. Instead they only allow internal clickable links between their own subdomains to keep it all to themselves. In the SEO world, this is actually pretty frowned upon and considered to be psuedo unethical.

I find treasuries a great tool for newbies to learn from. First, you are looking for the best pictures, so you are training your eye to see what looks good to those who are quickly passing through shops. Second, you are probably making a treasury of things that interest you, so you are doing some price comparison, as well as shopping the competition.

If you want to really use your treasury time well, stop and read some of the descriptions and note what you like and don't like about a few of them, then adjust your descriptions to suit what you have learned. Stop at each shop and read their policies and look at their announcements to see if you learn any good ideas.

The last reason I would make a treasury is to have some fun. They are a creative endeavor and the result is satisfying. If you have had some fun, then it is a worth while activity.

As a marketing tool, I think they are less than useful.
